another short one ik but it's leading into other stuff

Anna's POV:

We follow the new nurse through the hallways after saying bye to Sab and promising her we'll come back soon. My heart is pounding in anticipation. Eva's finally waking up. I haven't seen her in days.

We take a couple of turns and ascend two floors in the elevator before reaching Eva's room. I take a deep breath and steel myself for whatever I'm about to see.

It's not enough to prepare me for the sight of this beautiful girl lying motionless, huge pieces of her skin flaming red and swollen. I glance away, tears forming in my eyes, but force myself to kneel beside her. Taking her hand in mine, I stroke it gently, willing her to open her eyes and see me with her.

They tell us she's conscious but will take some time to fully come awake. It's probably a good ten silent minutes before she stirs at all- and that's a tiny twitch of one of her fingers in my hand.

"Eva?" I ask, all the hope, sadness, fear in my voice. "Hey, Eva, can you hear me?" Her eyes shoot open and she lets out a quiet gasp. "Hey, hey, you're okay. You're okay. It's me, Anna." She slowly turns her head to the side and it's everything I can do not to flinch at the badly burnt side of her face.

"Hey, beautiful," I smile at her. "Welcome back to the real world."

    Eva's POV:

I open my eyes to a blindingly bright room. It freaks me out for a moment- where am I? Then I hear a soothing voice and joy rushes to my heart. Anna?

"Hey, hey, you're okay. You're okay. It's me, Anna." I turn to face her. When I move, my skin stretches weirdly and there's a warm burning sensation. "Hey, beautiful," she says, grinning. "Welcome to the real world."

    The real world? Shit... what?

"You took a bit of a beating," another voice jumps in. Katie's head peeks into the edge of my vision. She looks exhausted, but she too is smiling.

Slowly it all comes back to me. Anna's bedroom- oh shit, that happened. How'd I take a beating? I try to think back to when I was with Anna. Oh. The fire alarm. Oh my God. The fire... leaving Anna... the wall of fire... Sab. Sab. I look up at Anna.

"S-" I can't get words out. My throat is tight, raspy.

Anna shushes me gently but I shake my head.

    "S-sa-"

"Sab's fine. She's here too. In a different room."

She's alive. I thought she wouldn't make it. Fuck, the way she was lying so still. I shudder at the memory. Everyone made it out. Did they? I didn't see anyone besides Sab. What if there's someone they're not telling me about? I try to speak again and it hurts worse this time.

I hear Katie ask for a piece of paper and a pen, and the nurse hurries out of the room. A minute or two later, she returns. Anna holds the piece of paper in front of me so I don't have to move, and she gently helps me move my hand up to it. I try to write but I'm in so much pain. I stop trying and my arm flops back onto the bed.

"Come on, Eva, you can do it," Anna urges. "Try again."

She holds my arm up to support it and I start to scribble out almost illegible letters. One word, two, three. Short and simple.

"Is everyone okay? Yeah, everybody's alright. We all got out, you and Sab are the only ones in the hospital. No need to worry." I breathe out a sigh of relief.

The nurse steps forward, telling Anna and Katie that I need to rest now. I try to protest, but Anna leans forward.

"I'll be back every single day, alright? You rest up and focus on getting better." Katie gives me an air hug and heads out.

Anna stands up but lingers for a moment. She gazes into my eyes, her sadness evident on her face. Then she bends down and gives me a kiss on the forehead. "Get better for me, how bout that?"

    And then she's gone.
