sorry this one's pretty short i'm trying to figure out where i want to go from here, but i wanted to make sure i got a chapter out today

Anna's POV:

Four days. Four days she's been in intensive care. Unconscious.

First-degree burns on her face, second-degree burns on her hands, shoulders, and legs. They don't know how bad she'll be, when she'll wake up. It's all up in the air and I hate it.

Sab woke up two days ago. She's been in and out of consciousness, hasn't spoken yet. The doctors say smoke inhalation is her biggest problem, along with some second-degree burns on her arms. Her recovery time may be shorter than Eva's but she'll likely have long-term breathing issues.

I haven't been allowed to see either.

We've been staying at a hotel a couple blocks down from the hospital. Every morning, the managers bring us breakfast and we spend most of the day sitting in a waiting room outside the hospital. I've taken to leaving my room and sleeping on Katie's couch, unable to bear being alone.

That first day, I got my hand bandaged and treated. We were all checked out for smoke inhalation and they told me I wouldn't have much lasting damage. As of right now I still have a bit of a cough and my throat is sore but it's bearable. Especially when I think of Eva and Sab.

Katie's phone rings with a loud jingle and we both jump.

"Pick it up," I urge. She grabs it from the nightstand and I sit next to her on the bed.

    "Hello?"

"Hey, Katie," I hear. It's Lance. "Sab's conscious if you wanna come over, the doctors say you can see her today. I don't think they want too many people there, though."

We're both up and moving before he even finishes his sentence. I grab the pair of sneakers we bought from a nearby store and slip them on, not even bothering to tie the laces.

"We're on our way, Lance, see ya soon," Katie says and hangs up the phone. We both make a dash for the elevator, which can't come fast enough. We take off walking as fast as I can with my damaged airway, hurrying down the sidewalk.

When we reach the hospital, we give a clerk standing at the front desk our names and she directs us to where Sab is. We race up the staircase and I have to pause to cough hard, painfully.

    "You good?"

"Yeah. Fine. Let's go." She turns and keeps running up the stairs. I follow, a little slower this time.

The door to Sab's room doesn't have a window so we knock, putting our ears up to the door to see if we can hear anything. Then it opens and we both stumble into the room.

Katie and I both freeze at the sight of our friend. She's hooked up to multiple different machines, has an oxygen tube under her nose- holy shit.

    "Sab..."

She slowly turns her head, but her eyes don't seem to focus on us until a few seconds later. A small noise escapes her mouth and I'm by her side in a heartbeat.

"Hey. Don't try to talk, it's ok."

Katie sits down on the other side of the bed and puts a hand on Sab's shoulder. Our friend flinches in pain and Katie pulls back her hand.

"Fuck. Did I hurt you?" She gives just the tiniest of a nod and Katie apologizes profusely.
A nurse standing at the far side of the room speaks up.

"You're Anna, right?" I turn to face her.

    "Yeah..."

"You know you saved her life? Both of them. Nobody knew they were still inside until you went back there. A little longer and who knows how different the outcome would've been. So, no matter how hard this is, keep in mind that you saved them."

I glance back down at Sab's still form, a tear escaping and running down my cheek. She tries to say something again and I bend down so I'm closer to her mouth.

    "It- it's t-t-true."

    "Oh, Sab, stop it."
Katie laughs and punches my shoulder. "Take credit, dummy. You ran into a fucking burning house for them."

"Well when you put it that way... consider me a hero," I reply, starting to smile. "Nah, for real, I'm just glad you're okay."

The door swings open with a loud clang and we all spin around. A breathless nurse in scrubs peeks in and when her eyes land on us she says,

"The other burn patient is waking up if you girls want to come see her."

    Eva.
