We walk toward the little Toyota in silence. When we reach the car, he steps in front of me and holds the passenger door open.

"M'lady," he says, gesturing towards the open door with a twinkle in his eye. I roll my eyes as I step to get in, but I'm holding back a grin. Still, I'm confused. He goes from threatening to kill me to acting like the perfect gentleman. Bipolar maybe? I almost laugh. I runaway from one crazy man, just to get in the car with another crazy man. The bitter irony. He looks at me and crinkles his eyebrows.

"What are you smirking about?" He asks, cranking up the car.

"Nothing," I say, shaking my head. It wouldn't be in my best interests for me to tell him that I think he's crazy. He looks at me strangely.

"You're weird," he says. "But that's none of my business.So... what's your name, stranger? And what brings you to the streets? I'm assuming you didn't just up and decide to take a walk, and then ask a suicidal stranger for a ride." He says this conversationally, but I hear a hint of curiosity. However, this is the question I was hoping to avoid. I pause before answering.

"I'm Addison. And, um, family issues," I say vaguely. No use getting into details with him.

"Hi, Addison," he says, at me. He has dimples. I smile back. Maybe this could be fun.

"What about you? What's your name? And what caused you to...uh...try to do what you just tried?" I ask casually. But then, I notice his whole demeanor change, and I know I've asked the wrong question. I watch as his grip tightens on the steering wheel, and his expression goes cold. His voice is very controlled when he answers.

"My name is Jack. And I already told you," he says, "I did bad things. That's all I'm going to say about it. I'd appreciate it if you didn't ask again." With that, neither of us spoke for the next hour.

Short chapter, I know. But that seemed a good place to end. Tell me what you think in the comments. I'll post more soon! :)
