"Here. I'll help." I came over to help Mitch button up his shirt. It was his first day of school. He didn't even look phased. He was going to be an angel hiding among humans. His beauty was out of the ordinary. I'm sure people were going to notice it.
"You're nervous."
"I'm nervous for you. We aren't going to have a lot of classes together. But they will call someone who has around the same classes to show you everything." I fixed his shirt again. I was explaining things to him and I messed up the buttons. "But I'll see you at lunch and you have to pretend to eat. I'll buy you something. Now let's go over what I told you."
"Okay." He waited for me to begin. I glanced at the clock. I had ten minutes to review this for him and myself.
"Where are you from?"
"New York." I decided I was going to put him on the other side on the country. Not many people move to Washington. At least not our part of Washington. It's more towards the Seattle area where people would move. Our town is smaller and surrounded by woods.
"How old are you?"
"I'm seventeen."
"Birthday?"
"July twenty fourth."
"Why did you move here?"
"My aunt and uncle live here. Kirstie is my cousin and I live at their house. Two-two-"
"I don't need the exact address." I let out aloud laugh. "You're good. Just try not to talk to people. If they start getting personal say you're trying to focus." He nodded. This angel hung on my every word. I could say something completely ridiculous and he would listen. "Go upstairs. I'll be up in a minute."
"Okay." He went up the stairs while I continued to get dressed. I put on a new shirt before following him upstairs. When I saw him on the couch, I felt my jaw drop. His hair....it was different. It was shaved on the sides and had long bangs that went over his eyes.
"Mitch? What did you do?" I came to kneel down in front of him.
"The tv said it was the hottest new style and that I should get it right away." I brushed his hair behind his ear. He didn't look half bad.
"You don't always have to do what the tv tells you."
"That women was very persuasive though." His eyes went back to the tv. I turned off the infomercial that was coming on next. I had a feeling Mitch would do anything that the tv asked.
"It's time for school." Mitch sat in the passenger seat as we slowly picked up each of my friends. Then we made it to school. Kirstie let Mitch hold onto her. The angel was so scared. Especially when people kept bumping into him. Poor thing didn't know how to act. I felt his hand slip into mine for comfort. I couldn't bring myself to pull away. He's lost and scared. Confused even. So when he wrapped himself around my arm, I let him.
"I'll take him to the office, Scott." Kirstie had pry Mitch off my arm.
"It's okay, Mitch. Todrick will be waiting for you." I went to my first period class as the bell rang. I kept worrying about Mitch though. The poor guy. He's probably terrified. I glanced back when the classroom door open. Mitch was standing there with his new binders clutched to his chest. We made eye contact for a split second before I turned away.
"I just got the email. You must be Mitchell Grassi." The teacher walked up to bring him to the front of the room.
"I go by Mitch."
"Anything you would like to say to the class." The teacher turned Mitch to face the class. I could see him tense. It looked like he was so nervous that he was sweating.
"Not really." He whispered it, hugging his binders closer to him.
"Okay. Take a spot next to Jay. He'll be taking you around school today." I watched as Mitch went to go sit at the table next to Jay. And Jay seemed to begin flirting with Mitch. Nick and I weren't the only gay kids at our school. And Mitch was paired with a very openly gay Jay. I went off to my second period. I felt Mitch's eyes on me.
"Scott!" I was tackled to the ground by someone. I noticed Mitch on top of me. It was lunch time now and everyone was staring at us. "I missed you." He said it innocently.
"Get off of me!" I pushed him off roughly. "What are you doing?" I got to my feet, bringing him up with me. I glanced over at Nick who was talking to Jay. I could have just ruined my chances with him. I brought Mitch in the hall to speak with him.
"I'm sorry." He said it meekly.
"We are suppose to be acting normal. Tackling me in the hall isn't normal, Mitch."
"I'm sorry." His voice was getting more quiet with every time he spoke. It looked like he was about to cry.
"It's okay." His arms wrapped around my neck and he brought me close. I hugged him back. "I don't want the government people taking you away and ripping you apart. I want to make sure you are safe."
"Scott?" I broke the hug at the sound of Nick's voice. He was standing at the row of lockers.
"Nick. I want you to meet my friend, Mitch." Nick came over to shake a smiling Mitch's hand. But suddenly, the smiling dropped when their hands touch. Mitch's eyes widen and he immediately pulled his hand away. He returned to being polite.
"It was nice to meet you, Nick. I must find Kirstie now." He ran away, avoiding being near Nick. Nick watched after the angel.
"Is he okay?"
"He's nervous of his first day." Nick slowly took a step towards me.
"Is he your boyfriend?"
"Uh, no. Just a friend."
"Really?" Nick went to lean against the lockers. I watch the way his hand went to rub against his throat. It was like he was trying to bring my attention to that area. "You heard about Jay's party, right?"
"I haven't."
"Well, it's this Friday and it's bring a date. So I was wondering if you wanted to be my date." I tried to hold in my excitement. I played it off very nonchalant. Or at least I tried to. I put my hand on the locker next to his head. He grabbed the collar of my shirt to bring our lips together. "I take that as a yes. See you tomorrow." He left and I was leaning against the lockers. I noticed Mitch staring at me with Kirstie right beside him. There was a conflict going on in that head of his.
And I don't think Mitch was going to tell me.
