The morning air in the house was crisp and cold, as it usually was in mid-November.

I’m 17 now. It’s been 3 years since mom was put in the hospital. She woke up from her coma 2 years ago. She doesn’t remember much at all.

A lot of her memories were wiped out during her coma. It took her a while to remember me at least, and even now she doesn’t remember everything.

She has permanent amnesia, we were super lucky she remembered me.

She also has tuberculosis. It’s basically a disease where bacteria attack the lungs, I don’t know all the details.

Mom has always had bad lungs, with both of her parents smoking when she was little and her taking up the same habit as she got older.

I lugged my heavy, sluggish body out of bed and walked downstairs. I live alone.

After mom was hospitalized, I lived with my grandparents in the next town over. They weren’t the most welcoming people, they blamed me for what happened to mom because I “wasn’t there for her”.

After 5 months of living there, I turned 15 and then went back to live in my own house.

On our planet, Frottle, the legal age of adults is 15.

Earth died millions of years ago, some believe it to be just a legend and that Earth never existed. I believe that Earth was once a prosperous planet, with lots of good people.

Our planet was heading down the same path that Earth was on.

Scientists and astronomers were trying to look for habitable planets that we could easily get to, but they haven’t had any luck finding one.

I open up the cabinet and pull out cereal. I pour myself a bowl and get comfortable on the sofa, turning on the news to see what’s going on in our world.

The news reporter says that the president, Mr. Turner, had an important announcement that was to be announced in the capital of the planet, Krukers, at the end of the week.

I finished my cereal and grab my school bag and then I’m off to school. The walk from my house to school was about 40 minutes.

My friends never came to pick me up because they don’t know where I live, and I would prefer it if they didn’t know.

I prefer it because if they were ever to come into my house, they would realize I live by myself and then I would have to tell them about my mom.

None of them know, except for my girlfriend, Sarah Macklebee. Our relationship has been rocky lately, I’ve been distant.

Sarah’s the only one who knows about my mom, and she knows that her condition is getting worse.

I know Sarah’s trying to be considerate, but I can tell me being distant is really getting to her though.

It’s not like I can help it though, my mom has always been my number one priority.

I was lost in thought and didn’t even notice that I had already got to school. I took a deep breath, preparing myself to put on a happy face for my friends.

I entered my high school, Bradshock High, and headed straight for my locker on the third floor. On my way there, I saw my entire friend group.

“Just my luck”, I thought. All of them were in the stairwell on the way to my locker. Shayla Obsidian, Hunter Black, Blake Macklebee, Aurora Thunder, Derry Dressler, and Ivy Green.
