I stretched out next to Bev and smiled at her. She smiled back and said, "Hi."

"Hi," I replied. We talked for a bit, tanning in the sun and laughing. It felt good to have a female friend, and I finally realized she wasn't so bad at all. I had no doubt that the rumors weren't true.

'Bust A Move' started playing on our boombox, and Bev glanced over and bit back a giggle. I look over to see all the guys turning away, making it so obvious that they were staring at me and Bev. Richie dug into Ben's backpack, pushing his glasses up.

"News flash, Ben. School's out for the summer!" He said in a terrible British accent.

"Oh, that? That's not school stuff," Ben replied, looking over at Richie.

Richie ignored him and pulled out a postcard and laughed. "Who sent you this?"

"No one!" Ben exclaimed, snatching it out of his hand and his face turning red.

It was apparently Eddie's turn to be nosy, because he grabbed a large binder. "What's with the history project?"

"Oh, it's not a history project. When I first moved here, I really didn't have anyone that I knew. So I just started spending time in the library."

"You went to the library? On purpose?" Richie asked, passing the binder around.

"I want to see," Bev said, getting up. I followed her, sitting next to Stan while she sat next to Bill.

"What's the Blackspot?" Stan asked while I leaned over his shoulder to get a better look at the newspaper.

"The Blackspot was some old nightclub that was burnt down by that racial cult," Eddie responded, while Stan passed it to me.

"Y-Y-Your hair-" Bill murmured, staring at Bev.

"Your hair is beautiful, Beverly," Ben interrupted, giving Bev a smile.

She smiled back and tucked a piece behind her ear. "Oh, right. Thanks."

"Why's it all murders and missing kids?" I ask, passing it to Bill.

"Derry's not like any town I've ever been in before. They did a study once, turns out, people die or disappear 6 times the national average," Ben said as if it was no big deal. Eddie looked alarmed and Richie stared at Ben, brows furrowed.

"You read that?" Stan asked skeptically.

"That's just adults. Kids are worse.. way, way worse," Ben said. Stan's face turned pale. "I've got more stuff if you want to see it."

And that's how I ended up riding to Ben's house on a perfectly fine day, to stare at some files and documents he had found from 20 years ago. As we walked in, I was listening to Richie and Eddie talking about god knows what. "I heard he has a rollercoaster, a pet chimpanzee, and some old guys fucking bones!"

"That's so cool!" Eddie exclaimed.

As we walked into Ben's room, Richie was the first person to say something. "Woah woah woah, wow!"

"Cool, right?" Ben asked, looking proud until Richie responded, "No! No, nothing cool."

"This is cool," Eddie said, picking something up from Ben's desk before setting it back down. "Nope, no it's not."

Stan must've seen the look of despair on Ben's face, because he pointed to a picture on the wall and asked, "What's that?"

Thank God for Stan, I thought as Ben turned around.

"Oh, that? That's the charter for Derry township," he explained.

"Nerd alert!" Richie chuckled.

"No, it's actually really interesting. Derry started out as a beaver trapping camp," Ben said defensively.
