I clenched and unclenched my clammy fists. I was so nervous. The pungent smell of alchohol definitely wasn't helping. I glanced down at the green bottles that littered the carpet of the front seat. Dad must've been drinking again.
"Nervous?" Dad slurred.
"Um, yeah.." I answered. My first day of high school.. How could I be calm? Anyone would be excited at the thought of starting high school, but that wasn't the case for me. The knowledge that the nightmares of primary school and junior high would be tripled replaced all excitement with fearful anticipation.
"A whole new year of bullying, yay!" I muttered to myself.
We pulled into the parking lot of St Andrews High School for the High Ability. I gaped at the colossal building before me. There were more than one. Some buildings were painted blue, some were painted grey. The buildings spread out over a few kilometers. The school name was lettered in glass that were painted yellow. The school crest was imprinted beside it on the main building.
A running track encircled a huge stadium that could seat about at least a thousand people. My jaw dropped lower. Track and field ! Maybe this school had some perks, after all.
"Off you go, then! Byeeeee," Dad cried too happily, waving me off. I rolled my eyes. Exactly how bad was his hangover?
I walked tentatively towards the school. I felt invisible among all the students that were pushing past each other to get inside the school. Some girls were clinging to each other and squealing, exuberant at finally meeting their friends. Boys were giving their friends those awkward 'man-hugs'. I was all alone.
"Ow!"
A guy crashed onto the ground beside me. He winced in pain before slowly getting up. "Having a nice trip, Antonio?" A guy sneered.
Antonio grabbed his books and shoved them back into his sling-bag, ignoring the rude remarks. Five boys sauntered past him, exchanging smirks with one another.
I bent down and started helping Antonio to collect his school books. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah," he nodded, "I'm fine."
He looked up at me and flashed me a smile. His hair was a dark brown, a shade darker than his chocolate-brown eyes. He was tanned and handsome. I smiled back. "I'm Audrey. Audrey Bernadette Carson."
"Cool," his eyes twinkled. "Your initials are A.B.C."
I laughed and extended my hand to help him up. He took it, saying, "I'm Darrius Antonio. Half spanish."
"Who were those boys?" I asked.
"Oh.. They're the 'cool boys' of this school. Gets their way and all, you know what I mean. They aren't exactly the nicest people in St Andrews, though."
"I can see that," I replied. I stared of in the direction they had stalked off in.
"People call them The Wanted, 'cause that's what they are among many girls here. The leader's Max. Tom's the second-in-command, Siva's the nicest, followed by Jay. And the last member is the one all the girls go for. Nathan. He's a right jerk. His sarcasm hurts more than Tom's famous headlocks."
"I see.." I trailed off.
Darrius and I then walked towards the school just as the warning bell clanged. At least I had someone. I felt my spirits lift. Maybe, just maybe, this year wouldn't be so bad.
