Accidentally

Chapter Two

  I cringed as the sound of chairs scraping against the floor resonated through the English Literature classroom. Everyone was in a rush to head down to the canteen for recess. I smiled as I slung my bag over my shoulder. Everything had been perfect so far. The classes I had been to had all been interesting and the slideshows on each topic had been captivating. 

  I mentally slapped myself. I was thinking like a total geek. That was what had made me such a prominent victim for bullying in primary school and junior high.. I shuddered at the dreadful memories. 

  "Look! Audrey the Geek's walking through the hallway! Make way for the hunched princess, everybody.." 

  Everyone in the hallway cracked up laughing as I walked past them, eyes fixated on the ground. I clutched my books tightly to my chest. Little did I know that to Bianca, a hallway of people laughing at me wasn't enough to destroy what self-confidence I had left.

  "Ahh!" My books flew out of my arms and I crashed to the ground face-first. Bianca had stuck out a high-heeled foot to trip me. Guffaws rang in my ears as I struggled to pick my books up. No one offered to help me. No one.

  I fought back the lump starting to form in my throat and hurried out of the classroom.

  "Ahh!" I shrieked as I bumped into somebody. He sure scared the living hell out of me.

  The person doubled over in laughter, clutching his stomach. I folded my arms. What an idiot. As I pushed past him, he grabbed my arm. "Hey," he said, trying to contain his laughter. "Sorry for bumping into you." 

  I nodded curtly and rushed out of his way, refusing to look at him. I wasn't confident enough to, and I didn't want him to recognize me after I had embarrassed myself. 

  As I walked on, I spotted Darrius. Relief washed over me. Finally a familiar face.

  "Hey." I walked up to him.

  "Why was Nathan talking to you?" 

  "Nathan?" I asked, confused. 

  "The guy who bumped into you..? You really didn't recognize him?"

  Oh gosh. What had I done ?! I had embarrassed myself in front of one-fifth of The Wanted. I despreately prayed he wouldn't recognize me.

  "I'm stupid," I muttered, shaking my head.

  "Audrey, here they come," Darrius whispered.

  The five boys sauntered through the hallway. Girls immediately rushed up to them. I rolled my eyes and Darrius snorted.

  "Nathan! Come to my party?"

  "Heeey Siva! You've got cool hair."

  "Nathan, I'd eat my eyeballs out if you'd be my lab partner!" 

  The boys basked in the compliment, but they didn't even acknowledge the people swarming around them. As they walked past us, Nathan caught my eye. I wanted to look away, but somehow I couldn't. He winked at me, and butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Girls were shooting daggers at me. Looks like my start-anew plan had failed.
