"Let's go," Darius said a little harshly a while after Nathan had walked away. I wanted to ask him why he was using that tone of voice with me, but my anxiety got the better of me. He started brisk-walking, making me look like an idiot for having to struggle to catch up with his lengthy strides.
We walked to the cafeteria. Well, I ran. Darius walked.
I took a deep breath upon entering the cafeteria. This was the moment of truth. Lunch. I scanned the cafeteria, my jaw dropping. It was twice as big as the cafeteria in my previous school. The walls were painted red with abstract paint artistically splattered all over it. Lanterns, yes, lanterns, were hanging from the ceiling above, casting a warm glow of colourful lights fromt the different-coloured lanterns.
There were about eleven stalls. My eyes darted to the menus that were written in neon boards with flashing string lights bordering them. Wow. You name the food, they sell it here.
"Come on," Darius called out, annoyance dripping from his words. My heart thumped faster as I followed him. Seriously, what did I do ?
We walked among the throng of people forming snake-like queues to buy their lunch. We finally settled with a stall called Junkfood Craze. I ordered a slice of pizza with extra cheese and a bag of Ruffles. Darius settled for a slice of apple pie and a tub of strawberry-peach yoghurt.
Tension hung in the air between us as we made our way to an empty table and took a seat. I picked up my pizza and took a bite. Darius did the same with his apple pie, looking anywhere but at me.
"Um, Darius?" I began.
Darius stared at me. " I know, I know, I'm sorry," The words gushed out in a rush of anxiety and nervousness.
"Huh?"
"You're wondering why I'm acting like this, aren't you?" He asked slowly.
I hesitated and then nodded curtly.
"I can explain. Uh.. I'm, well .. You know. When you were talking to Nathan, um..."
I leaned in eagerly. "What?"
"Well I'll just say it. I love you."
