"Yeah, me .." I said awkwardly.
"Cool!" He exclaimed. "So, uh, d'you like Science?"
"Yeah, totally -"
"May I interrupt this lovely conversation, Ms Carson and Mr Sykes?" Mr Higgins called out to us.
I flushed a deep crimson while Nathan saluted Mr Higgins, who huffed indignantly before turning back to the whiteboard.
"Having fun with your boyfriend ?" I heard a voice say behind me. I resisted the urge to look back.
"What makes you think he'd like you, New Girl ?" The girl on my right hissed at me.
Nathan was too busy exchanging high-fives with some of his friends to notice the two girls, who were now sniggering quietly. I forced back the growing lump in my throat and looked ahead.
"..So you and your partner will have to observe the eating habbits of the some of the animals in the school pond and note down the observations, in the respective columns, by next Friday," Mr Higgins was saying.
Aww shucks. Wasn't being partners with the school's most wanted boy bad enough?
Mr Higgins started passing papers around. As I looked at the list of animals assigned to me and Nathan, I bit my lip and gulped. The term 'high ability' clearly wasn't misused for the name of the school.
Soon after, the bell rang. The girl behind me pushed her chair back with a screeching sound and swept past me, whacking my face with her massive handbag in the process of doing so. "Oops," she giggled, glancing at Nathan, "clumsy me!"
"So see ya, partner!" Nathan patted my back and smiled. I forced a smile and nodded, stuffing the paper in the 'Science' section of my file. As soon as he sauntered out the classroom door, I let out a huge sigh.
