If I thought that the rest of the evening was going to be uneventful, I was sorely mistaken.
First was Isabel dragging Hugo in front of Godric for whatever judgement was due.
I'd managed to satisfy Sookie with all the details of Godric's blood sharing. She was of the opinion that he was kind and genuine. I didn't disagree, I just thought that he could also be many more things than just that, and the unknown was my concern.
After some small talk with some of the local vamps I found myself a quiet corner, edged in by a textured stone wall and a room divider-come-bookshelf. I sipped my drink, enjoying the little bit of alone time when the vampires close by parted slightly, allowing me a clear view to Godric and who was stood in front of him.
"This is the one who betrayed us." Isabel said and she gave a sharp kick to Hugo so he was kneeling before Godric.
Godric looked from Isabel down to the human in front of him "Hugo. He's your human, is he not?"
"Yes, he is." Bitterness coloured Isabel's voice.
"Riveted?" Eric's interruption made me jump. I hadn't noticed him slip beside me.
"Actually yes" I hissed up to him. He rolled his eyes and I frowned right back at him. "She loves him, Eric." I remembered Isabel awkwardly starting to chat with Sookie and me on our first visit to the nest. The subject she broached was Hugo. She loved him and he had betrayed not just her, but her nest and sheriff. I couldn't help it; I felt sorry for her.
"It is her weakness."
"Do you really think love is a weakness?" I asked, looking up at him. His face was unreadable but I took his silence as his response, "because it's not" I crossed my arms and leaned back against the cold stone wall. I was disappointed that my voice wasn't as firm as I wanted it to be. Then again, didn't my circumstances prove myself wrong? Wasn't my... feelings for Eric my weakness? Ugh, change of subject required. "Where have you been, anyway?"
"Busy."
I rolled my eyes at his scintillating conversation.
"When do we go back to Louisiana?"
"So eager" He breathed, his features were soft, almost teasing with a half smile, but the way he said it... It was like he wanted to be cruel.
"Eric" I said, he didn't need to say it like that. I would have said as much but he spoke before I could.
"Tomorrow, or the day after. It depends what Godric wishes"
I looked back at the sheriff who was talking quietly to Isabel and Hugo. The latter was crying on the ground. No doubt wondering how much longer he had to live. But I just couldn't imagine Godric killing him with everyone here. Surely he would be handed over to the authorities to be dealt with alongside the FOTS that the Police had already arrested?
I looked back at Eric and was surprised to see his eyes on me. It spurred me to talk. "About earlier..." but I faltered. I didn't know what I wanted to say or what Eric wanted to hear. "He said it was a gift."
His eyes remained on mine, and I couldn't look away. I realised I needed to know what he was thinking. What were his exact thoughts on me taking Godric's blood? But, as always, he revealed next to nothing.
Eric looked away first, to Godric, and finally replied "Don't we all".
With that he pushed himself off of the wall and stalked forward to his maker, Isabel and Hugo. I watched as he bent and picked Hugo up off the floor. He kept hold of the scruff of Hugo's shirt and all but marched him out of the nest and to God knows where.
