Bread.
That's all that ever mattered to her. You could have the longest list of qualifications and experience but if you failed to cater to your own needs, to her, it was as good as having nothing. That was one thing she lived by. One thing she always made reference to. She didn't take note of who she hurt and how those people lived with that hurt but rather she took note of her hustle, her ability to cater to her own needs.
Call it gold-digging, call it home wrecking - she did not care. Beauty like hers could be used more efficiently than taking silly pictures and so she pampered herself, every evening, and chased her bag. She did things differently, the classy kind of way. She would not only roam the beds of married men like a typical prostitute you would find on any corner of a street but rather she would roam further into their marriages, their lives, their bank accounts and there - she would remain permanent.
"Milli enjoyed that dinner you made," Themba, the third highest in her ranking, complimented her. They were currently in his masters bedroom and Mpho was sitting nearby him, re-applying her makeup. "Really?" she asked, not really surprised or shocked. "Yeah, apparently she hasn't had such a good meal in a long time. I must thank you" he responded. Mpho simply smiled and continued with her makeup. She had witnessed a lot of brokenness within families and yet nothing could quite compare to Themba's family.
Sometimes she would feel bad, she would feel that her involvement was somehow making things worse but then she would snap out of it, like she always does when her guilt tried getting the best of her. "You should really take cooking classes," she said as she stood up, grabbing her purse with. Themba chuckled to her remark and decided that she was right. "I will certainly," he said as they walked out of the door.
It was 10am and Themba always made sure Mpho was out at least two hours before Millicent arrived. It always worked and Themba planned on sticking to it for as long as their fling was bound to happen. They drove for a couple of minutes before arriving at her place and Themba handed her the 20k. "Twice next week? Double the price?" He asked and Mpho kissed his cheek, before heading out, as an agreement.
She was booked with clients for the whole of next week but none of them were the first or second highest in her ranking so she would gladly cancel any appointment she needed to cancel. She walked to the apartment, wondering if the girls were home. With the busy schedule they all had, it was quite hard making some friendship bonding time. "Anyone home?" She called out as soon as she walked into the apartment.
The TV was on and a half filled bowl of popcorn was sitting on the counter near the TV. She took the bowl, placing the first handful of popcorn in her mouth and walked towards the passage. Her room was the first one on the right while Palesa's room was right behind hers and Lerato's was opposite from Palesa's room. "Rato? Pali?" She called out yet again, noticing Palesa's slightly open door.
She opened the door to find a sleeping Palesa on her bed and a dress slightly stained with blood on the floor. "Chomi," she called out again to check if she was really asleep but after a minute of silence, she decided to leave her to her sleep. She had no clients for the night so she decided to use her free time to really spoil herself. She needed new items to add to her wardrobe anyway.
Leaving the sleeping Palesa, she walked off to her room to take a long hot bubble bath. The sun was blazing outside but she felt that she needed the warmth of the water on her body. She hummed along to Doing It Wrong by Drake as she washed her body. During times like this her mind would usually drift to Themba and his situation but she chose to rather not think of it. She really hated feeling guilty.
After her 30 minutes bath, she finally got ready. She had no idea where she was exactly heading to but she would figure that out as soon as she finished dressing. She quickly finished dressing, did her makeup and finally headed for the door. Palesa still hadn't woken up so she left a note for both of the girls in case Lerato decided to show up. "Here goes to a night of fun," she said to herself, opening the door.
There stood a woman, round about her age, holding a gun that was pointed towards her. Mpho was never involved in crime nor has she ever dared herself to be so this was really the last thing she expected. What could've possibly put her in a situation like this. "You scream, I shoot," the woman said, staring directly into her eyes. Mpho tried remembering all the people she's met or crossed paths with but she was nowhere close to her memory.
"Who are you?" Mpho asked, trying to keep calm. "The woman who enjoyed your dinner," the woman answered, making Mpho gasp for a short while. There was this silence as they both stared at each other, Mpho wondering how in the world she found her. Themba was always the best at being discreet or just keeping things on the DL but I guess everything always manages to come to the light.
"You are going to shut that pretty mouth of yours and you are going to follow me to a specific car. If you dare try to run or make any drastic movement, I will make sure you regret it," she continued. Mpho simply nodded her head and slowly moved out of the doorway. The woman shut the door and walked behind Mpho with the gun closely pointed towards her back, telling her which way to go.
