Darkness.
Pure darkness.
It was the only thing that loomed in this hollow patch of land.
Light. Right. Up. Down. Forward. Back.
All black.
Step. Crunch...
The sound of crunching leaves was heard, though they weren't visible.
Step. Snap!
A twig? Did it break into half or more pieces? Nothing can be seen.
Step. Splash!
A puddle... of water? From the sound of the splash... it didn't seem so deep.
Step. Swish...!
Such a gentle breeze... Was that rustling just now? Are there trees here?
Step. Step. Step.
The sounds continued like a piece of horrifying music from a movie. It was following every step.
Step. Step. Step. Step. Step. Step.
The steps increased in speed but were still steady. Soon the steady steps gained a fast-paced and then running began. Heavy breathing had joined the chorus of natural sounds.
'Something is following me... Something is after me... Why don't you leave me alone? What did I ever do? What do you want? '
Steps heavy as they hit the ground. The splashing, snapping, crunching, and rustling only grew more.
'Leave... leave me, please. Leave me alone! LEAVE ME ALONE!'
Even as thoughts the words boomed and the music stopped. The steps grew slow, finally coming to a stop. Breathing heavily, frantically searching the darkness for a sign of escape.
Thump.
Knees buckled, hands were shaking, sweat rolled down from the chin. Eyes searched nonstop as if desperate for light. Hungry for freedom.
'Let me go... I don't belong here. I DON'T WANT TO STAY HERE ANYMORE!'
With that, tears streamed down onto the ground. Curling up into a ball, burying the head deep into the knees. Silently sobbing.
...
'Save me... I don't want to stay in the dark. Please, someone... help me...'
"Sweetheart, come here."
'Huh?'
"C'mon bro, everyone's waiting."
'Who-wha?'
"Let's go, son."
'Are you here to take me out of the darkness?'
"Of course. Your family awaits you."
'...Family?'
"That's right. Your beloved family."
'This voice... you are-'
