Chapter Five: Girl Time

Phoebe POV

Sorcha was sound asleep in her bed with her stuffed rabbit. Meg and Christine were sitting on my bed braiding each others hair, but I was busy digging through my suitcase for a sign language book. The book had been used by my tutor when she was teaching me how to sign. I wasn't very experienced in teaching, but I had taught Sorcha much of what she knew.

I finally pulled out the old tattered book and settled on my bed. I placed the book on the night table and signed as I spoke,"This is a book on French sign language. This is the sign language that my whole family knows primarily aside from British sign language. The method of sign that I use with Sorcha is fingerspelling. All you need to know is the alphabet to spell all the words."

"That's it? We just need to know letters to speak to her?," Christine asked confused. She probably thought it was more complicated than that. Maybe it was the fact I was using sign language.

"Only for communication with the Deaf and Blind. It depends on the sign language they use and of they prefer fingerspelling. Some try to use more signs from sign language used by the profoundly Deaf, but it's not so common," I explained the best way I could.

"So are we going to begin?," Meg crossed her legs and locked her eyes on me. Paying perfect attention.

"Alright, let's begin with the alphabet. Now sign after me. A...," I signed.

(Half an hour later)

"You both have it down perfectly. With a little practice you'll be able to sign the alphabet with no problem. I think now we can just socialize for the rest of the evening," I beamed, proud of their progress. And I knew that they really were interested in learning more about my culture, which was not so common nowadays.

I was happy to have friends who were hearing and had interest in my culture. It made me happy to think that they were so accepting. Not many hearing people try to surround themselves in the Deaf Culture.

I then heard a grunt and I turned to see Sorcha reaching out for me. She was clearly distressed, needing me to hold her. I didn't even hesitate to rush over and hold her close.

I knew what her nightmares are about. And that was why we had to leave Ireland. Why we left everything behind. Why I have to do anything possible to protect her. And I mean anything.
