Chapter Seven: I Remember
Phoebe POV
Sorcha was fast asleep in her bed. I knew that she didn't get much sleep last night, it was a miracle I got her to sleep at all. I only worried about what was best for my little sister.
I missed our home in Ireland terribly, but I knew we could never return home. Not of it meant putting Sorcha in danger. She only had me now. At least until, mother and father came.
Erik POV
I had snuck out of the secret passage and ended up standing at Phoebe's door. I had no idea what I should do. It wasn't like she'd hear me knocking, nor would I be able to start a conversation. There was no other option, I had to just walk in and accept whatever happens.
With one deep breath, I slowly opened the door. As soon as I peered into the room, I noticed Phoebe fixing her hair at the vanity. She looked absolutely beautiful, her soft red curls bouncing with every single stroke of the brush. I closed the door behind me, and tapped my foot on the ground. Pondering what I should do to get her attention.
"You realize I can feel the vibrations your foot is making," Phoebe spun around and smiled,"Hello, Erik. It's great to see you."
I just stared at her, completely frozen. She couldn't hear, yet her senses were heightened. I was at a clear disadvantage with this woman, much like I was with Madame Giry.
"Are you going to speak or are you going to just stare me?," She asked while signing.
"Um, yes. I heard you singing to Sorcha and....uh... I was amazed by your talent, considering your hearing impairment-," Phoebe raised her hand to stop me.
"Stop right there," she said as she signed,"Deaf people are not 'impaired'. We aren't broken and we don't need to be fixed like most Hearing people think. Don't ever use 'broken' and 'Deaf' in the same sentence. I have dealt with ignorant people before and I don't want that in my personal life. I will let that one slide, but never do it again. Understood?"
"My sincere apologies. I had no idea," I realized I sounded like a complete idiot when talking to her. It was absolutely unacceptable to say such offensive things.
"I forgive you, and thank you for the compliment. I can luckily hear enough to carry a tune. Although, it doesn't always sound good. Considering that I'm Deaf, I guess I can get away with a song once in awhile."
"Well, that's why I am here. I want to teach you to sing. You have great potential, but the fact you are Deaf would be more intriguing to people. Would you consider being my student?"
"Maybe, but you would have to learn how to sign. It would make everything easier for me if I were your student," Phoebe signed as she spoke.
"So is that a yes?"
"Come back later and I will let you know. I have to practice signing the show."
"Of course, I'll be back after dinner," I headed to the door.
"Perfect, see you then," Phoebe smiled.
"Goodbye," I gave her a smile back as I left. Maybe she would say yes, but what if she said no? Would she even be considering it? And I wasn't sure if I would be any good at signing. Hell, I may have the dexterity, but I could maybe sign something wrong. She might laugh at me. Come to think of it, what does a Deaf person sound like when they laugh?
