"Why were you in our room last night?"

At this Cas looked up.

Sam saw as the angel weighed his choices. He could lie, say he had not entered the room and Sam must have either imagined it or dreamt it. He could blow it off, saying either he didn't know what Sam was talking about or he was just checking on things. Or he could tell the truth.

Sam saw as Cas came to a decision and slightly released the tension in his muscles.

"I heard Dean calling for me." Cas admitted. "I just wanted him to get some rest. He couldn't do that with memories of Hell invading his mind. So I helped him."

"How long have you been doing this?" Sam asked. Honest curiosity in his voice.

"Whenever I could. The calls started coming quicker more recently, and as the angels are no longer an issue, I had time at night. I've been doing it for a couple weeks now."

Sam knew something of significance was deeply rooted in the relationship between Dean and Cas, but whatever it may be, Sam knew it was pure. He wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth.

"Sam." Cas began awkwardly, embarrassed that Sam had caught him consoling his hunter. "I would appreciate if you didn't tell Dean about this. I doubt he would let me assist should he know and my interference seems to help improve his mental health."

"Of course Cas." Sam said instantly. In all honesty, he wasn't exactly sure how one would even begin that conversation.

Hey Dean. Just so you know, the angel we're good friends with has been visiting you at night when you call out his name. Don't worry though! He's just rooting through your mind to remove nightmares of your forty years in hell and muttering soothing words into your ear.

But its not like Cas was doing anything bad. Sam knew that on his darkest day Castiel would never use Deans fears or insecurities against him. Besides, Cas might not be able to gather context clues to make sense of a reference, but he could read Dean. With or without his angel mojo. If he wanted to hurt Dean Winchester, he would have done it already.

Cas nodded his head and turned to leave, but Sam's voice made him stop.

"Hey Cas."

"Yes." He responded, turning back around.

"Just," Sam said, looking for the words to encapsulate his gratitude for the angel being in his brothers life. "Thank you. Thank you for helping him."

"I will always help him." And with the sound of rustling wings, the angel was gone.

Officially on season 7 and dear lord, the Winchesters cannot catch a break. BTW (Spoiler alert for season 7) WHY DID BOBBY HAVE TO DIE! I think and hope he will coming back.
