"Can't mornings be like this always?"
Hwanhee leaned against the gate, and stared at the soldiers as they did their morning practice. I peeked, and scanned their faces, but Kyungsoo wasn't among them, so I went back to brush my teeth. Wait. Why did I do that? I paused. What did I just think?
"Jia, do you think I should call my mom, and ask her to stop looking for boys." She grinned as she looked at the soldiers dreamily. "I might get a match here."
I gargled, and spit water before looking at her. "You've hit your head pretty hard, I see."
She shrugged, and then sniffed. "Umm... That's a delicious aroma. What is cooking in the kitchen?" she wondered, and glanced at me. "Wait! Exo DO is the chef here. Should I go and flirt with him for a bit?"
I rolled my eyes. "You can try," I muttered, but frowned when she actually took off rubber band off her hair, and ruffled them dramatically. "What are you doing?"
"Am I not looking.... sexy?" She gave me her rehearsed sexy smirk, and I gagged. "Ya! Kang Jia?" she grumbled, and I made a gesture as if I was about to puke. "Huh! Just say you're jealous of me."
"Jealous? Why? Because you're about to meet Kyungsoo?" I raised my brows, and she pouted, nodding her head. "I'm not, you can go to meet your Kyungsoo oppa and scare him for life with your dramatic ass. I don't care." I scoffed.
"Ya!" Hwanhee screamed.
"What are you two doing!" Ray's voice boomed in the scene, and I fell on the ground, startled. He came out of his tent, and glared at us both. "This is a soldiers ground, and you two are being childish? Do you want me to send you both back?"
"No!" She folded her hands in request. "I swear, I'll control my vocal cords from now on." She did an aegyo, and he made a disgusted face.
I chuckled from my position on the ground, and Ray looked down at me. "Get up, and freshen up. Idiots." He gave us a look, and walked away.
I and Hwanhee looked at each other, and made a face. "Idiots," we imitated him, and laughed out loud. The morning went with the regular chorus with bathing and taking care of our personal needs. The food here was delicious, and I made a mental note to compliment Kyungsoo on his cooking skills later. He was awesome.
I curled my hair for the day, I loved my long hair and pale complexion. For some reason, something had changed in the environment. I felt at ease, and whenever I feel good, I do makeup. I put on my favourite lipstick shade, and dressed up for the first time in a while. I knew I was going to receive attention from Hwanhee and my team, not because I was looking over the top.
But, because they were going to see me like this, all dressed up, after my beak up for the first time. I had thrown myself in the work so much that I hardly gave a look at my appearance. Maybe because somewhere I blamed myself for the thing. That I wasn't beautiful enough to keep the guy. Even if I had given lecture to Iseul on self love, I wasn't good at this myself.
"Goddess."
"Beautiful butterfly."
"I feel like an angel landed on the earth today."
"Jia, I'm definitely taking you out after my military discharge."
Today, I felt exceptionally good. Maybe because getting male attention had my confidence boost up. Pity. I wish I would be able to feel comfortable in my skin without these excuses someday. Someday.
"You knew you would get this type of attention. Didn't you?" Hwanhee narrowed her eyes, and grinned. "Jia, do you like someone here?"
"No." My eyes widened, and I shook my head, but my eyes accidentally settled down on Kyungsoo as he came to our direction. Hwanhee turned around, and gasped when she saw Kyungsoo and then looked at me. "It's not what you're thinking." I pressed my lips.
"But, you looked at him when I asked you whom do you like!" She exclaimed, and I pushed my hand over her mouth. I bowed to him as he passed by our side, smiling. There was an understanding between us, that we won't talk in front of others.
I loved how easily he could understand my intentions without me telling him. I wanted our friendship or whatever it was to be private. He was an idol, and had a public life. My life was an opposite chaos. I was a very private person. Even my break up was exposed to my co-workers because my ex made a scene in the hospital, not because I told them.
"Leave me!" Hwanhee pushed me, and faked a cry. "How could you do this to your own friend? He's your brother in law!" She said dramatically.
"Who is your brother in law?" Ray came to us, and I stomped her foot, and she wiped her fake tears, and shook her head. "Hey, Hwanhee, are you crying?" he came to her, and I gawked at them. Did the scary mentor of mine really showed concerned for her?
Wow.
Hwanhee, being a dramatic ass, shed some more tears, and glanced at me. Ray patted her head, and tried to console her, and she signaled me to go. Really? They went into their own world of fake scenarios, and I sighed, and walked away from the scene. Hwanhee should be an actress. Stupid girl.
I strolled in the area, and inhaled fresh air. Kyungsoo was there a few feet away from me, and I went to him. "Soldier DO?" I went to him, and he looked up at me. "What are you doing here?" I sat beside him.
"Just thinking." He threw a stone in the pond. "I hope I'll be able to make a healthy comeback."
"You will be." I looked up to the sky. "Something in your mind?"
"You're going to celebrate the new year with us this time."
I bit my lip. "Yup. 2020. I wonder what this year will bring." I wrote my name on the sand, and felt his gaze on me, but didn't react. His eyes were one of a kind, and I always get uncomfortable with his gaze. "Do you have any wish for 2020?"
Kyungsoo sighed, and looked away finally. "I don't know. Whatever that makes me happy."
"That's a good theory too." I smiled.
"You have something on your..." He placed his hand over my cheek, and I again felt that warmth. His thumb caressed my skin, and I stared at him.
"Your cooking is excellent," I blurted out. Really, Jia? Really? That's what you could think of? Really? Argh! My dumbass mind couldn't think anything else to cover up my awful communication skills, and he chuckled, finally. "I'm sorry. I'm not good at interacting with anyone."
"You're fine." He pulled his hand away, and I gulped. "And, thank you for the compliment."
I bit the inside of my cheek, and we sat there in silence. A beautiful silence which made me feel comfortable and happy. Being in someone's company as Kyungsoo himself was an honour. Not because he was an idol, but because he was a good human. I knew that about him.
Maybe, just maybe, this trip would turn out to be better than expected.
