Chapter one- knee deep
All my life, I dreamt of being someone else, I dreamt of being a princess. That my mother had left me on the doorstep of the Oliver household and she would soon return to come get her beautiful daughter and come bring her back to the castle. Then, when I turned nine and realized that Princesses were pretty much a myth nowadays, with the exception of certain countries, I dreamt that my mother and father were wealthy, lavish, people, maybe Actors or dancers, or even the CEOs of a mega corporation. I tried to convince myself that I wasn’t Vada Saffron Oliver, that I was really Seraphina Azalea Parkington, daughter of Louise and Raymond Parkington. Sadly, I know that it’s not true. I’ve gone through seventeen years of my life and not a single claim for me.
Little did I know that as soon as I stepped into Starbucks that fateful day, my life would change forever. I stepped up to the counter at Starbucks before school on September 30, I ordered the usual Java chip frappuccino. When I turned around to head to the second counter I see a familiar face look at me, yet I cant put a name to it. “Vada?” (pronounce Vay-duh) “um..yeah?” “you don’t remember me , do you?” “no..I ’m sorry, who are you?” then it clicked… it was Lucas my brother’s childhood best friend “Lucas, Jared’s best friend from elementary through high school and the occasional football game.” he smirked. “oh! How could I be so stupid! Oh my gosh, hi!” I said. “so, do you still have those Seraphina fantasies?” “sometimes..” I blushed Scarlett at my confession. “hey, it’s cool. Can I ask you for something?” “sure.” “I don’t want to lose touch with you, do you mind putting your number in my phone?” he said, thrusting his blackberry at me. “um, okay.” I said and automatically started typing my number in. “thanks, hey I’ve got to go.” “’kay bye.” I said as I grabbed my coffee and followed him out the door to my car. A red chevy equinox, and then I sped off to school.
I walked through the doors of my high school in a daze, why would he want my number? I was just Vada; Jared’s annoying little sister. I was so deep into thought that I didn’t notice my best friend, Athena, come up behind me “hey hey, baby V!” “Holy French fries!!” I yelled. “woah, no need to get worked up V.” “oh hey, Athy, sorry. I just lost myself in a train of thought.” “well, I’ll say!” she laughed “you ready to go to class?” Class! That’s right! I’m at school. Holy crow, today’s going to be a long day. Thankfully I survived the day, including gym which is a miracle for me, and was finally able to head home. But it didn’t take much for someone else to startle me, “Hey Vada!!” yelled a husky voice, it was my other best friend, Kellan. “hey Kel.” I said “you headed home?” he asked. “yeah. Usually, that’s what people do after school.” “right. Well, mind if I tag along? I have absolutely nothing to do and my sister’s at home practicing for her ballet recital. It’s absolutely torturous and unbearable in my house with Charlotte listening to all that classical crap!” he begged. “fine, fine, fine.” I said and he climbed into my car next to me as we headed back to my house.
“okay, so guns ‘N’ roses or boyz II men?” I asked. “which do you think is my answer?” Kellan said, “you’re absolutely right, boyz II men it is!” I yelled and headed straight for the cassette player. “no!! I meant guns n roses!” Kellan said with a stern face. “chill dude, I know. I was just kidding. Once again, you failed to notice detail and didn’t realize that the boyz II men case was right next to you the entire time.” I laughed and Kellan rolled his eyes. Just as I was about to hit play, my phone began to sing “my heart will go on” by Celine Dion. “and you say that you’re a rock music fanatic.” Kellan said with a smug smile. “shut up!” I yelled as I answered my phone.
“hello?” “hey.” said a deep voice on the other end of the line. “um.. Hi.” “it’s Lucas.” the voice said. “oh hi Lucas!” I yelled, and quietly let out a sigh of relief. “Is right now a bad time? I could call back later.” I checked my watch, it was 10:30pm. “nope, I was actually just about to listen to guns n roses, so you’re in OK timing.” I laughed. “I just wanted to tell you goodnight and to have pleasant dreams.” I blushed, what was I supposed to say? “um.. You too.” I squeaked, and I heard his deep chuckle faintly, “goodnight Vada… or should I say, Seraphina Azalea Parkington.” I then smiled, because even though I haven’t spoken to him in 2 years, he still remembered the whole name. “I’ll call you tomorrow.” “alright, bye.” I said.
I hung up the phone, still dazed. “who was that?” Kellan asked suspiciously. “no one… Just Lucas.” “Lucas, as in Lucas Adams? Your brothers best friend. What did he want?” “apparently he wanted to wish me goodnight.” Kellan then rolled his eyes and looked at his black and yellow G-shock watch. “hey, it’s getting late. I’ll come over tomorrow. Don’t you dare listen to the tape without me” he smirked. “ ‘kay.” I said. “bye Vay.” he said and he headed out the door. I then took the opportunity to shower and put on my fluffy panda pajamas.” I picked up my long brown hair into a low ponytail that draped over my shoulder. I then stepped into my very pink room and dipped under the covers into Dream world.
