You had just settled into bed for the night when you heard the first knock on your front door. It was something urgent and hurried, not much of a knock at all. Concerned, you got out of bed and pulled a dressing gown around yourself. You hurried to the front door of your apartment and looked through the peephole. What you saw had you undoing the chain in a hurry.

Spider-Man stood in your hall, hunched over in pain. His hand grasped his side with bright red leaking through his fingers, standing out sickeningly against his monochrome costume.

You gasped, hands flying to your mouth. "What happened?"

"Sorry, dollface, I'm sorry," he wheezed. "You know I wouldn't risk your front door usually..."

"You don't have to apologize. Let me help you in."

You slung his arm over your shoulder, careful not to aggravate his injury. Slowly and with your help, he managed to shuffle inside your apartment. You kicked the door shut behind you and directed him to your bedroom.

"Alright, let's get you laying down," you said.

"I can't take your bed, darlin'..."

"You can and you will. Now lay down."

Your Spider chuckled weakly as you helped him sit. "Ain't you bossy."

  "Only for you," you smiled.

Gently, you lifted up his legs, helping him get positioned on the bed. You heard him wince and you uttered a quiet apology.

"What happened to you, Spider?" You asked. "Must be pretty serious for you to come knocking on the door to my cave."

"Goblin's trigger men," he grit out. "Packin' heat. One of the bullets got through the kevlar."

You shook your head. "You're lucky you're not wearin' a Chicago overcoat."

Though you couldn't see his face, you knew he was smiling. "Takes a lot more than a handful of lead to kill me."

"Don't go proving that. You gonna need stitches?"

"Not today. Healing factor should take care of it." He winced again. "Just hurts an awful lot."

"I bet it does." You sat on the edge of the bed. "Did the bullet go through or...?"

Spider-Man shook his head. "No. Had to dig it out soon as I was able."

You spluttered in disbelief. "You...what?!"

Your Spider held up a placating hand. "Don't blow your wig, doll, it's nothing I haven't done before."

You grabbed his hand and gave it a comforting squeeze. "I know that, but... It just bothers me that you had to do it alone."

Spider-Man looked at you, his expression imperceptible underneath that mask and those goggles. You wished you could see his eyes, get some sort of idea what was going on in that head of his. His silence persisted and you gave his hand another squeeze.

"You alright, Spider?" You asked softly.

Your Spider let his gaze wander back to the ceiling, letting out a heavy breath. He nodded slightly. "Just... Been a while since someone spoke to me like that. Threw me for a loop, I suppose."

Your heart pinched painfully. "You been alone, then?"

He nodded. "Not that long, but feels like a lifetime. But I tried tellin' myself it was better this way. If you don't have nobody, then there's nobody to get hurt when things go wrong."

You listened silently, holding his hand like a lifeline. Maybe it was the pain loosening his tongue and he was just looking for distraction. Either way, you didn't want to interrupt. Your Spider had never really talked about himself and you were eager to learn more, to know the man behind the mask that you had come to love so deeply.

"I lost folks," he continued, almost as if he were in a daze. "Good folks. Good folks who deserved better. Better than me, at least. 'Cause if it had been someone better lookin' out for them, then maybe they would still be here."

"I'm sure you tried your best," you tried to reassure him.

"But my best wasn't good enough. Still ain't, apparently." He gestured to the gunshot wound on his side. The bleeding was already slowing thanks to his advanced healing. "All I do is make mistakes and it costs people their lives."

"Now, you stop that kind of talk right now," you said. "I know you, Spider, and I know that's not true.

  "The things I've seen, Y/N..."

"I don't know what you've seen, Spider, but I can almost guarantee they were not your fault. It was the fault of whatever madman planned those schemes in the first place. You can't place that responsibility on yourself."

"Then why was I given these powers, if I can't even use 'em to save the ones I love?" He asked, distressed.

You shook your head. "I don't know, darling, I really don't. But you can't keep beating yourself up for things that are in the past."

Suddenly, Spider-Man sat up, ignoring the way it disturbed his injury. He gripped your hand fiercely, looking at you with feverish intensity.

"And what if it's you, Y/N?!" He was shouting now, seemingly furious. You could see, though, that he was just viciously frightened. "What if something happens to you and I can't stop it?"

Before you had a chance to reply, he lowered his head, tearing away his gaze from yours. His voice had lost all fire when he spoke again.

  "I can't...lose you, too..."

Carefully, you pulled your hand from his grasp before enveloping your Spider in a tight hug. You held him close, hearing him let out a shaky sigh, feeling his hands circling around you in return.

"You listen to me, Spider, and you listen good," you whispered to him. "Nothing, and I mean nothing, could ever get me away from you. The devil himself could try to pry me loose and I wouldn't give. You mean the world to me. You mean more than the world to me. Ain't nothing or no one taking me away from you. I promise."

"Y/N, I... I don't know what to say..." He was trembling. You only held him tighter.

"You don't have to say nothing," you said. "All you gotta do is rest, okay? Just rest so that wound heals up nice and fast."

Spider-Man pulled back, staring at you with those expressionless goggles. You knew, however, that there was the shine of a thank you in those eyes. And there was no mistaking the small, tentative smile in his voice.

"For you, doll, I can do that."
