The hour was late. The sun had long since disappeared from the sky, leaving only the glow of New York City's streetlights. You sat impatiently in your living room, acutely aware of every second that ticked by, anxiously wringing your hands. You absolutely refused to go to bed until you saw that your Spider was safe.

Your Spider had been tracking a group of Goblin's goons over the past few weeks, following them from place to place and gathering intel. He hoped he would soon have enough information to get the drop on them and send them to the big house. It wouldn't be enough to touch their boss, but it would be a step.

He had caught wind of a meeting happening down at an old warehouse by the docks in the middle of the night. When he told you where he would be heading and why, you had requested earnestly that he check in with you when it was done. You just wanted to know that he was still in one piece. Goblin and his men frightened you; you got uneasy anytime he had anything to do with them. Spider-Man made sure to promise that he would return.

But it didn't make the waiting any less torturous. You felt like you were going mad, trying not to think of all the horrible things that could happen to him. Goblin and his men were known for their ruthlessness. Your Spider promised he would return, but how long were you to wait before it was clear something was wrong?

Suddenly, that all familiar tap on your window finally sounded. You all but jumped from your couch, rushing over to open the window as quick as you could. You fervently ushered him inside and the second he was on his feet, you were hugging your Spider something fierce. Taken aback by the sudden attack, it took a moment for him to respond accordingly, wrapping his arms around you in return.

"Oh, Spider, it's so good to see you," you breathed out, voice trembling. "I was so terrified something awful was going to happen to you, I-I couldn't even think of sleep until I saw you here safe."

"There, there, doll, it's alright," Spider-Man was quick to assuage your fears. You felt his gloved hand run lightly over your hair. "I'm here. I'm safe."

You buried your face in his chest, your hands gripping his coat tightly. "I'm sorry, Spider, I'm sorry. I don't know what got into me, I just... I was so scared."

You felt his chin gently rest atop your head. "It's okay, darlin'. I'm okay. I'm sorry for worryin' you so."

Now that he was here, now that you could hold him so close, you began to feel a little foolish for working yourself up so badly. After all, he was Spider-Man. It wasn't like he couldn't handle himself out there, with those impossible powers of his. But even still, you had seen him close to knocking on death's door too many times, many of them because of Goblin's hatchetmen. You couldn't bear to lose him. Not when he meant so much to you.

Your Spider, ever perceptive, noticed your change in spirit. He let go of you, only to delicately tilt your chin upwards so he could meet your eyes.

" 'Sides, I promised you I'd be back, didn't I? You know I wouldn't break a promise, 'specially not one I made to you."

You could hear the smile in his voice and that coaxed out a smile of your own. He always knew just what to say to calm your wayward nerves. You pulled him in for another hug, delighting in how safe and secure you felt in his arms.

But there was also no denying how tired he sounded, too. It had been a long day and you were sure skulking around in the shadows for hours would wear down anyone, even if he did have special powers.

"You sound tired, Spider," you mumbled against his chest.

He chuckled softly. "I am tired. Been a long day and boy, do Goblin's goons like to chat. Hadda wait around for hours before they talked about anything useful."
