Three weeks after my initial doctor's trip, I'm finally free to leave. "Thank you. I'll pay you back somehow," I tell the old man, holding his wrinkled hands in mine.
"Child, you don't have to pay me. Your bills were covered by the kind man that brought you here," he responds. I wish him good look before leaving. I'll make some food for him and bring it to his doorstep. Whenever I find a way to cook, I will.
In my new dress, I make my way down the crowded street. My clothes are worn, but comfortable and I've been scrubbed clean. I look different now. The first trip I make is for a job, and I know the place to go. M. Armistead's bookshop on Rue de Verneuit.
When I arrive at the bookshop, M. Armistead is hiding, probably organizing new books and putting them on the shelves. I peek around the book-covered shelves to find him, and it reminds me of when I was a child. "Sophie?" He questions, walking out of his back room, "My, how much you've grown! You're a lady now!"
I giggle and blush, waving away his words. "I'm hardly a lady, sir. I've come to ask for your help," I respond.
Stepping out from behind the shelf, I walk to the man and I hug him. "Of course child. What do you need?" M. Armistead asks.
"A job. My family was taken away by guards, and I was left on the street," I explain to him. He steps away to check his books, then returns with a stack of novels.
"Begin organizing these, and I'll pay you at the end of the week," he says, returning to his work.
My mouth drops. He's....he's actually giving me a job! I quickly rush to put the books on their shelves, a giant smile on my face. Now, all I have to do is find a place to live! That shouldn't be too hard...I hope. The landlords will take pity on a poor, helpless, sweet young lady, won't they? I finish organizing the books just before the bell rings, signaling the entrance of a customer.
A man walks into the store, looking at all the spines of the books. His clothing is so familiar, but the hood is down, revealing his face. Long brown hair tied back in a ponytail, and a scar across his nose. "Sir?" I ask, walking up behind him. He looks back at me, his eyes full of realization. Before I can say anything else, he storms out the door.
I cringe when the door slams. My first customer...and he leaves like that. Something in me urges me to follow him, so I do. "Sir!" I exclaim, trying to find the man in the blue coat. He looks back at me, somehow spotting me in the crowd. Turning away, he pulls up his hood and I pause. "A-Arno," I mumble, stopping in my tracks.
Now I really have to find him; I still owe him a token of my appreciation. I'll find him one day, I know it.
