A month has passed since I ran into Arno once more, and my stomach twists at the thought that I have missed him. I keep anticipating if he will ever return, so I can give him his gift. I saved up some money to buy a bottle of wine to go with the food I prepared. Since there aren't any customers in the shop, I spend my time reclining on M. Armistead's old armchair, my eyes focused on a copy of Utopia by Thomas More. The Latin on the pages confuses me slightly, but I continue to read, jotting down the words that I don't understand.

"Kindness and good nature unite men more effectually and with greater strength than any agreements whatsoever, since thereby the engagements of men's hearts become stronger than the bond and obligation of words." I mutter quietly, flipping onto the next page. Thomas More's ideas are basically gibberish to me, but the challenge of the novel makes me feel intelligent and encourages me to keep reading.

"Do you know what that means?" Someone asks, entering the shop. It's the man- it's Arno!

"Unfortunately, I don't. But I would be happy to learn," I reply, bookmarking the page and laying the book beside me.

"It's part of a creed that I live by. You cannot force mankind to unite men, they must do so naturally," Arno explains, sitting down across from me.

"And this creed is?" I begin before Arno holds up a finger.

"I already told you too much," he replies.

Shrugging, I slump back into the chair. He rises from his own seat and starts looking around the shop, glancing at the spines of novels and then back to me. Arno seems amused by something, but I just don't know what. My lips close together in a pout, but Arno only smirks.

He eventually picks a book and walks over to the counter, to which I meet him at. "5 livres," I tell him. Hey, I don't make the prices! Arno hands me an assignat.

"Did you read this book yet?" He asks. I shake my head no.

"I haven't, but I would like to soon. And I still owe you for saving me-"

"It's okay," he begins, but I stop him.

"I could have died, it's a big deal. What would you like? Food? Wine? Books? Or...something else?" I start, a knot forming in my stomach. I really don't want to use my body as a form of payment. But in a war, I guess sacrifices have to be made. He quickly realizes what I'm insinuating and blushes immensely.

"Well, if you must insist, join me for lunch. I'm sure your boss won't mind?" Arno offers. I look back to M. Armistead, who is too busy with paperwork to notice. "Shall we go?" He asks, offering his hand

"Gladly," I reply before we leave the bookstore.
