Chapter 2

~*~

The young girl with hair as red as fire waves goodbye to her parents at the front door as she heads off to school. Her parents hold each other close as they watch their little girl walk past the ivory fence. She had insisted to walk with her friends and they had finally given in. She holds her teddy bear close and throws her pink backpack over her boney shoulder. Meeting her older cousin down the end of the road, he holds her hand tightly to make sure she's safe. His jet black hair falls in front of his eyes, obstructing the dark shadows lying beneath. Those trusting blue eyes capture the girls attention as she beams up at him. As they walk along the road, the young girl meets a few of her school friends. Walking along together as a little group the snow starts to fall, thudding to the ground. Never once does the girl shiver, not even a flinch. The warmth of her cousin's hand reassures her that nothing can ever harm her. Not even the cold.

Smiling and laughing together, they all walk along the narrow path, following the normal icy trail to school. Finally they reach the little alleyway as a shortcut. Dustbins rattle in the wind, filling the air with a disturbing smell of rotting leftovers from the Italian restaurant out the front. Shadows linger, circling the ground next to the dark buildings surrounding them. A chilly air wraps it's way around the tiny group of school girls as they all push and shove each other playfully.

"Wait, I dropped Teddy!" The red haired girl lets go of her cousins hand and runs back to pick up her teddy bear. As she looks up, she's greeted by a pair of gleaming white teeth.

The girl steps backward, fear filling her little golden eyes. Two more figures approach. The girl tries to run away but is stopped by another figure. Snarling their teeth, they all back her into a corner. The little girl screams but nobody hears her. Her little group of friends have disappeared. Her cousin, gone. The horrifying figures come closer and closer, until she drops her teddy bear into a puddle on the floor and screams out just one last time.

What? So you've never seen a crazy person escape an asylum before? It's not my first attempt. The many times I've tried to escape this dreaded place, weave my way through security. I almost know how everything works now, what cameras are where and how they all delightfully connect. Oh yes, I will escape this time. I can feel it. I start to giggle as I step out of my cell. The cold air instantly hitting me but I do not shiver. The cold is weak and fragile, how dare it try and consume me! I can feel the heat churning through my fingertips but I stop it just in time. Now is not the moment to use my strength. The torn red dress will be my distraction, those security men will not be able to resist. Just like Red, they're all pigs. The lot of them.

I begin to run. The hallway flickers with a ghastly white light momentarily blinding me, the darkness from my chamber was obviously just a set back. The dark metal walls drip with odour and the floor echoes behind each of my rattling footsteps. I just need to reach Tim's room. He's the one I need to let loose. He will cause so much havoc that they won't even know I've escaped. They won't know what's hit them. I've been waiting for this moment, waiting to explode, waiting to bring forth my wrath.
