I have a friend,

Her name is Katie,

She found a treasure chest

Now she's in Alaska, looking for the key

She comes from California

And she's as sweet as vanilla

Though she can't handle the cold

And she's a real whiner, you know

She always thinks of others, though

Which is why I do love her so

As we were hiking the wet trail,

I told her, "Lets build a fire and rest."

Even though she was shivering and frail

She said "No, it's fine,"

She quivered, and gulped, "A little longer wouldn't do no harm!"

Chuckling dryly after saying that sentence, and continued to walk.

The silent slowly grew, and I felt in no need to talk

I took a step too big, and felt my self slip

My hiking stick fell, and although I did trip,

I kept my balance and didn't fall.

Katie looked at me, her big doe eyes glimmering in worry.

"It's ok," I said, "Continue on your way I will catch up!"

I said, giving her a quick and faint smile before getting down,

And picking up my stick.

I caught up to her

and asked, "Katie, how are you holding up?"

She didn't answer, just walked

I continued, thinking she was just sad I didn't ask for any help earlier,

And so i talked.

"Hey, I'm sorry okay? It's not too big of a deal."

"Katie? Katie! Katie why wont you an-" I said while quickly walking in front of her

And then looking her direction, before freezing in place.

Before I knew it

Her face was blue

Her eyes red and puffy

Her lips, purple

and the tip of her nose red.

I took of my bag as fast as possible to help.

I grabbed the med kit

And rushed to find the hot packs

I placed it on her forehead

And hugged her, squeezing her in hopes that my body heat

Would transfer onto hers,

In hopes, my heat could help too.

She then asked me,

Almost as a dying wish

To find the key for her

And as the wind made a swish

I looked in her eyes

Her warm brown eyes

As a glassy drop of clear salty liquid

Rolled down her rosy pink, but now blueish and purple cheeks

Without thinking

I abruptly thought "I love you"

And as though she knew,

She threw her hands around my shoulders,

Kissed me, then said "I love you too"

Before making a thud and collapsing to the ground

And no longer making a sound

That's when it really hit me.

I lost a friend

I lost a lover

I lost a person truest to my heart

Now it was my duty to take on her part

She will always fill a gap in me

Because little did she know,

She was my key

I had a friend,

Her name was Katie...
