It was Aspen shaking me awake.

"Aspen?!" I whispered, trying not to wake up the rest of the family.

"There's something outside you need to see." he whispers in return. I picked up my shoes and slippers, and followed him out the door.

There are fireworks in the sky. Sparkles of blue, green, purple, and pink glitter across the starlight. I sighed in content, albeit a little irritated for waking me up so late in the night.

I put my head on his shoulder, and I can feel his posture relax. he pulls me over to a bench ad we sit down.

"You know, Lucy," he starts, but I stop breathing and sit upright.

"Yes?" I respond, my voice getting higher an octave.

"I don't love America."

"Yes, you do." I insist.

"No, Lucy."

"Yes," I pause, tears swelling again, "you do. I see it everytime you look at her. The way you strive to protect her. The way you look at her with fondness in your eyes."

Aspen paused, guilty.

"She will always have a piece of my heart, but I don't love her anymore." he reasons.

I stood up tall. "Save it. Farewell, Officer Leger."

I turned on my heel, and walked away, the tears now streaming down my face. When I laid down, I couldn't sleep. My heavy eyes were wide awake, filled to the brim with salty tears.

The sounds started to come out in choked sobs. America groaned, and turned over, swatting at the air. I laughed to myself. Grabbing a pillow and a blanket, I trudged outside. The Carolina air was cooler at night. I pulled myself in the treehouse, and lifted the blanket and pillow right along with it.

Miss America was kind to us Sixes. She understood. But she will never understand my pain.

I thought about home, the palace, Aspen. Hidden kisses and stolen moments were all we could have, as we were devoted to the palace. The Royals came first. Always.

I laid down on the cold, hard floor. My body ached from the lack of comfort, but I dealt with it. I pulled the blanket over my shoulders, staring up at the ceiling. I had never had the comfort of a long-lasting home.

If I couldn't have my own, I might as well live with the one I had.
