that friday morning, the gang met at their usual spot before first period. kesley was going on with her usual complaints of how they should start making first period at 9:00, but they all knew that wouldn't happen.
savannah scanned the halls until her eyes landed on the brunette boy, who was opening his locker. she didn't feel any need to walk over to him, but she found herself glancing his way every now and then as she listened to her friends' conversation.
"i'm just saying, first period should start at 9:30." kesley reasoned.
daniel, her usual victim of debate, laid out his explanation. "yeah but we need like 6 hours of school a day, so would you rather go home early or come to school late and leave around four?"
"how about neither? we come at 9 and leave at 2 like normal-"
"but the state-"
"who cares about the state?" kesley interrupted, "the state and country will screw us over eventually anyways." the whole group looked at the tired girl, shocked at how deep she just went.
kesley made a face at all of them, hating the silence, "what? you can't tell me i'm wrong." she shrugged, holding onto her backpack strap.
still with blank and clueless stares, daniel talked with his hands, "ok but-" before he could say anything more, jack placed his hands over the boy's mouth and stopped him.
"just give it up, she can go all day." the look in jack's face made it obvious that he's witnessed more than a few of kesley's infamous debates. "we're gonna head to class." the two of them waved goodbye to the group as they walked away.
rowyn looked over at the unusually quiet blonde next to her and nudged her shoulder. "hey you good? you're quiet today."
"yeah usually you'd side with me in kesley's debates." daniel chimed in, the three of them walking down the hall to the english department.
"i'm good guys, i promise." savannah laughed. "i guess i'm just nervous for tryouts is all."
rowyn and daniel looked at the girl with raised eyebrows, "did you just say-"
"you do remember you're the captain of the girls' varsity team right? last year? the first sophomore to ever beat out the juniors and seniors? or did it all just-"
"ok ok, i get your point." savannah looked at her two friends and laughed lightly, "you guys are too much you know."
"we do it out of love." rowyn smiled. the three of them stopped at the girls' english class where daniel dropped them off, saying goodbye to the two before heading off to his class. seeing their teacher already writing away on the board today's lessons, savannah took her seat at the back of the room while rowyn took her's in the front.
the bell rang and their teacher went over to close the door when zach came running into the classroom. she opened the door slightly to let him in before closing the door shut behind him.
"mister herron, you're late. again." she said loudly for the whole class to hear. zach took his seat in the middle of the classroom next to peter darwin while their teacher went back to writing on the board.
"hey can i borrow a pencil?" zach whispered to the boy. peter shook his head and went back to his work while. zach tapped michael's shoulder who sat in front of him and asked him the same question.
"mister herron. first you come to my class late, then you take it upon yourself to waste your peers' time?" all eyes went over to the brunette as he huffed a frustrated sigh.
