"And what are you going to be?" Harry asked Draco with an amused smile. Lily and Draco finally convinced him to join in on the fun of Halloween without drinking. They promised him it would be fun and that if all else fails, there would be candy.
"A vampire," Draco responded with a laugh.
"Should've guessed," Harry said while walking over to James, who was doing something with some bedsheets, "And what might you be doing?"
"Nothing" He replied with a smirk.
"Who's sheets are those?" Draco asked.
"Snivellus'" James muttered.
"You stole Snape's sheets!" Harry asked, rather loudly. Thankfully they were all in their room, and there was a silencing spell on it.
"You what!" Draco jumped up and ran over to James.
"Oh calm down, he's a vile human being. I'm sure you wouldn't mind if ya knew the guy"
"Why I outta-" Draco started, but Harry held his arm out to stop Draco's warpath.
Harry leaned over and whispered in Draco's ear, "To be fair, he is a bit of a git in this timeline"
"He's still Snape, though," Draco said through gritted teeth. "What have you got against him?" Draco asked James.
"Plenty. Tried to steal Lily, and then called her a- called her a..."
"Mudblood?" Draco finished for him, and Harry turned him with wide eyes.
"Goddamnit Draco," He told the boy who was just looking with confused eyes.
"I didn't say it to anyone! Or about anyone!"
"But it's the word in general!" Harry responded.
"Well you got to go around saying the Dark Lord's name, and even that's a little taboo!"
"What?" James asked, but neither boy acknowledged him. Harry looked around and was beyond thankful that Peter had gone with Lily to get some lunch while the other boys made their costumes.
"Voldemort is a vile human being!" Harry argued back, "Saying his name is just that! Saying his sodding name! Even saying that word" Harry said with disgust, "Saying that thing about someone's blood status, even in this kind of situation isn't right!"
"Why not?"
"It's like a cuss word, Draco. Except it's not something you put into a sentence to add emphasis, it's something you add to a sentence in a derogatory way. So we don't say it"
"Snape said it!"
"And that makes it okay, how?" Harry asked him. "Just cause Snape said it, or because you said it when you were younger, or your fucking father said it, doesn't make it right"
"But I didn't use it against anyone"
"It's the word in general Draco, doesn't matter if it's not against anyone; the word itself is wrong. Why do you think James couldn't say it?"
"..I thought he couldn't remember it," Draco said in a quiet voice.
"I'm pretty sure if Snape said anything rude to Lily, it would be imprinted in his head"
"I'm sorry"
"It's fine, Draco. You just need to know and to realize why we can't go around saying it. I know you didn't know, and I'm sorry for yelling; it just came as a surprise, and I honestly thought you realized how awful of a word it is, even without saying it about someone"
