Chapter 30: Grounded

Mia's POV

*****

As I walked through the school doors for the last time that year, a sense of satisfaction came rushing to me. I had achieved so much that year, and even with two weeks out because of my chicken pox, I was able to work and keep my high marks.

Thanks to the tutoring sessions, I was also getting better in math, and I was ecstatic about that. For once in my life I felt good about myself, and I couldn't but give the credit to the two unexpected people who had walked into my life that year.

I always loved the last day of school before winter break. Not because we would have a two week break after that, even if I certainly wasn't complaining about that. My school always threw a student concert and a party instead of lessons on the last day. It always gave people the chance to have fun with their friends without being reprimanded by a teacher for talking.

"There you are," Sophie said as she walked up behind me, a smile on her face.

My eyes widened when I saw her, and a smile stretched across my lips as I shook my head at her in disbelief.

During the Christmas party, students had the opportunity to go to school dressed in regular clothes, as long as they were not scandalous. Sophie was one of those people who hated the school uniform, even if she was probably the one who actually looked good in it. She always went all out for the Christmas parties, and seeing her wearing an all black outfit was certainly strange.

"Why are you dressed like you're about to rebel and run away from home?" I asked, genuinely interested in her answer.

Her outfit was gorgeous, there was no denying it, but I had never seen her wear something like that before. Sophie was the kind of person who would wear pastel colours whenever possible, and I was pretty sure that she didn't own any form of black clothing.

That was before she showed up wearing black leather pants, a black graphic tee, and combat boots.

"I don't even want to talk about it," she said, rolling her eyes. "Stupid Susan decided to bet on whether she could get Justin to kiss her in front of his parents. I said he wouldn't, and clearly he did."

"So the loser of the bet had to come to school in epic clothes?" I asked in confusion.

That would have probably been one of the best bets to lose.

"No," she said. "The loser had to wear the ugliest, darkest piece of clothing they owned for school. How am I going to show myself to people dressed in my brother's old 'Looney Tunes' t-shirt?" She asked with an exasperated sigh as she laid her head on my shoulder.

"Well, the joke's on Susan," I said as I grabbed her by the shoulders and gently lifted her off of me. "You happen to look incredible. Probably more incredible than any other person here."

Sophie was beautiful, and she certainly knew that at times, but that never stopped her from getting self-conscious from time to time. Unlike me, she actually cared about what people thought about her, and I wished that she would just stop doing that.

"Look whose talking," she said, giving me a once over. "Have you looked at yourself in the mirror today? Since when do you wear leather jackets and tops?"

I smiled as I looked down at my outfit, composed of a black top, military green leather jacket, and high waisted blue ripped jeans. It was certainly a new style for me, I had to admit. I had always been more of a fan of oversized things.
