I walked into my Mom’s house. I’m very stressed out and I can feel it. I plopped on the couch with a sigh. “What’s wrong, Abs?” Mom asked sitting next to me. “I just don’t feel good. I feel like I have so much to do.” I said laying on her shoulder like I did when I was little. “Have you checked your blood pressure in a while?” She asked. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure 3 years ago. I shook my head. “No. I’ve been too busy.” I said. “Abigail Bagans, What is wrong with you?” She asked grabbing my hand. She dragged me into the kitchen table and pulled out her blood pressure machine. I sighed. I took off my jacket. Mom put the cuff on me. “Don’t move or say anything, Abigail.” Mom said. “Yes, Mom.” I whispered. Mom started up the machine. I felt it get tighter around my arm. I sat there as it started beep. When it stopped beeping Mom gasped. “Abby, you need to see a doctor.” She said. I took the monitor from mom and looked. my BP was 165/105. “Mom, I’ll be fine. I’m just very stressed out.” I said taking the cuff off. Just then my brother and my husband walked into the house. “Nick, tell your wife that she needs to see a doctor.” Mom said. Nick looked at me for moment. “Why is that?” He asked. “My blood pressure is 165/105.” I said as if it was nothing. His eyes went wide. “Abby, You need to go to the hospital.” He said. I stood up and shook my head. “I’m going to be fine.” I said. Just then I got a harsh headache. I almost fell, but Nick caught me and sat me back down. “You need to go, Abby.” Zak said pulling out his phone. I shook my head. “If it gets worse I’ll go, until then I’m not.” I said grabbing my keys off the table. I kissed Nick and my Mom bye and walked out to my car. I got in and rolled all my windows down. Nick walked out and leaned into the window. “Abs, Call me when you get home please.” He begged. I looked at him. “I will. Love you.” I said pulling out of the driveway.
I woke up in the middle of the night with an intense pain in my stomach. I wanted to scream, but I held it back, so I didn’t want to wake Nick. I climbed out of bed. I walked to the bathroom. I felt the pain again, this time I felt something moving down. I found it strange. I walked into the bedroom just as the pain hit again. I gasped and fell to the floor. Nick must have heard my knees hit the floor, because he sat up. He looked over at me before jumping out of bed. He ran over to me. “Abby, what’s wrong?” He asked. I shook my head. “I have no idea.” I said holding my belly. “Do you need to go to the hospital?” Nick asked. I shook my head. “I don’t want too, Nick. It’s probably just cramps.” I said as it faded again. Nick looked at me and shook his head. “Abby, What if it is your blood pressure. It might kill you if you wait too long.” He said helping me into bed. “Nick, I can’t go to the hospital. That is where Adri died.” I said. “I know, Honey, but if it means keeping you alive then I will take you.” He said tucking me in.
A few hours later I woke back up to the same pain only worse. I got up and walked to the bathroom again. I ended up on the ground. I felt something move inside me. It slide down my pants as I stood up. Just like that the pain was over. I walked into the bathroom and pulled down my sweats. Inside was a baby. I covered my mouth and cried. “NICK!” I yelled. I could hear Nick running down the hall to the bathroom. He opened the door and froze. I stood there looking a the baby at my feet. Nick came walking in and grabbed a towel. He picked up the baby and wrapped it up in the towel. He looked up at me in a panic. Nick helped me to the floor and handed me the baby.
Nick’s POV
I jumped out of the bed when I heard my name being yelled. I ran to the bathroom where I heard Abby yelling. I opened the door and froze. I saw Abby standing against the wall and with her pants at her ankles and a baby in her pants. Abby was crying. When I got my thoughts clear I ran over and grabbed a towel. I picked the baby up and wrapped it in it. I held the baby and helped Abby lay on the floor. I handed the baby over to my wife. I walked out of the room and called an ambulance. They told me to tie off the cord. I grabbed a shoelace from my dresser. I walked back to the bathroom. I looked at Abby and smiled. She was talking to the baby. “Abs, I need to tie off the cord.” I said taking the baby from her. I unwrapped the baby. I wanted to know if it was a boy or a girl so I looked. I smiled as I tied off the cored. “He’s a boy.” I said handing baby back. Abby smiled and held him close. I heard a knock on the front door. I walked out of the bathroom to answer the door. “Are you the one who called about your wife having a baby?” The paramedic asked. I nodded and showed them the way. They cut the cord and lifted Abby onto the stretcher. I grabbed my car keys and followed the ambulance to the hospital. I called Abby’s Mom on the way, telling her Abby had a baby. She was in shock and said she was going to meet me up there.
I walked into the room they had placed Abby in. “How are you feeling, babe?” I asked kissing her head. “I feel better than I did yesterday. I found out my high blood pressure was because of the baby.” She said holding my hand. I nodded and smiled. “Your Mom wants to see you.” I said. “Have her come in.” Addy said.
Abby’s POV
My Mom walked in and gave me a kiss. “How didn’t you know you were pregnant?” She asked. I shrugged. Nick was sitting next to the bed playing with my hair. Just then there was knock at the door. A nurse walked in pushing my baby. I sat up and watched as they placed the baby in Nick’s arms. He was so tiny. “Mr...Mrs. Groff, I need a name for your son.” The nurse said holding up the paper work. I looked at Nick. “Umm… We never thought about a name.” I said. I thought for a moment. “How about Nicholas Andrew?” I asked Nick. Nick looked at me and smiled before nodding. “Nicholas Andrew it is.” The nurse said writing it down. She handed me the paperwork so I could sign. I quickly signed it and handed it back. “Mr. Groff we need you to sign also.” The nurse said. Nick stood up and signed the papers with his free hand. Having a baby 10 years ago helped train us. I smiled and laid back. Zak walked in holding Rebecca's hand. “Well, Well, Well. We had a baby.” Zak said letting go of Rebecca to give me a hug. “That I did.” I said hugging him back. Zak and I have always been close. We were raised together. We had to be, we are twins.
Nicholas got passed around the room and ended up in my arms. I unwrapped his blanket and looked at his toes. It has been forever since I held an infant. All my friends are unmarried or single. Nick walked back into the room with a cup of coffee. I knew he was tired. He went to bed at 2AM and then woke up at 6:30. “I’m sorry, Honey.” I said giving him a sad look. He smiled and walked over to me. “You have nothing to be sorry for. You yelled for me, because you needed me. I’m happy you did.” He said kissing my head. He looked at the baby and smiled. Nick leaned over and kissed his little boy.
