Obviously depending on wether it's a smutty one-shot or Twist and Shout, a ficlet or angst, you need the right moooood.
Unless it's the Hat Fic or those disturbing ones in which case any mood is too normal.
Normally you know your taste in music, and mostly you can get a song to turn into your OTP. I get music to set the mood, fast paced for hot smut or angst or action, normally a Fall Out Boy playlist would do for anything. You can get romantic ish for lovey scenes or 'making-love'. Sad, swelling music like Ludovico Einaudi for endings and powerful bits, your normal preference and stuff for anything else. But choice could be key.
If you prefer silence, make it silent! It's great just to be hallucinating vividly while imagining these fictional adventures, and moments in silence sometimes. And that's all you need.
If you're in public, the noise of life could be comfort depending on where you are, Starbucks or waiting for a bus? Let life make you isolate into the book to enjoy it. Music in noisy areas isn't the best as you then have too much going on, trying to listen to music, pick out conversation and process words at the same time. Brain = overload
If you're not enjoying the fic, search for another one to suit you and your music.
Read under the covers at night if that's what you do (what most of us do).
