I pressed my palms flat against his chest and pumped with all my might.
No, no. He has to breathe. He has to breathe.
I pushed again on his chest and ribs, deeper this time. Wake up, wake up. You can't die on me like this!
He wasn't responding. Like he had already accepted death. His face was pale, his lips blue with his body limp. What drove him to do this?
I pushed again but there was no response. Shit, shit, shit!
I couldn't stop. I just couldn't.
Pinching his nose to make a complete seal, I inhaled and blew into his mouth to deliver a rescue breath. His chest rose a little before I inhaled and exhaled again and continued the compressions.
Come on, come on! You have to live. All my life, I have seen people die. The childhood as the niece of the leader of a mafia isn't as pretty as people imagine. He has to.
I compressed again. And again. And again.
I delivered another rescue breath. And then I compressed again.
It felt like a race against time. I don't know how long he had gone without breathing. The longer this took, the more the chances of brain deficits or even brain death. I knew I should have stopped long ago since I couldn't even tell if his pulse was there or not. The second I pulled him out, it was like he was dead. But I couldn't stop myself.
I couldn't see another person die without doing anything.
I delivered a rescue breath again. And again. And ag--
Finally, finally, he sputtered to life. He coughed up water, turning over to the side, his body finally responding. He opened his eyes, panting heavily. They darted around hazily for a few moments before settling on me.
His eyes locked with mine, confusion clear in them. The green orbs looked startled, scared and hazy; he didn't expect this. Then all of a sudden, he punched the ground and screamed. His vibrant green eyes turned to me again, full of anguish and pain.
"Why?"
