Emily blinked her heavy eyelids closed for a brief moment feeling the exhaustion of the past twenty four hours plague her. She rested her head down on the desk for a brief moment before being woken up by Hannah with a light rub of her arm.
"Dr. Clarke." Hannah quietly whispered to wake Emily up.
The doctor moaned and lifted her head slowly. "I'm up. Sorry." Emily apologized and shook her mind awake again.
"Why don't you go get some sleep in the on call VHR. I will give you a call if his condition changes at all." Hannah looked down at Emily with a sympathetic expression.
There had been an ambush to a patrol group north of Camp Bastion that resulted in the loss of two soldiers and a third that remained in very critical condition. Emily had not left the soldiers bedside for twenty one hours doing her best to stabilize him the best she could to get him shipped out to a military German hospital. But, the doctor was now scheduled to remain on call for another ten hours despite Emily refusing to leave when her prior shift was over.
Emily released a heavy sigh and stood up, slowly walking over to Captain Layton's bedside taking one last look at his monitor before coming back to Hannah. "Ok, just a few hours and I will be back." She reluctantly agreed to get some sleep, but she would be useless if she did not. Emily grabbed the on call phone, "I have 44591."
"Noted, now go!" Hannah was nearly pushing Emily out of the hospital doors.
Her heavy feet kicked up the sand on the way to the VHR tent. Hearing the sound of an Apache landing caused Emily to look over across the airfield. The sun was starting to set across the landing, making Emily's feet halt to take in the spectacular peaceful view. It brought forward a certain sense of calm that she often seeked when she found herself in the middle of a war. It was little moments like these that kept Emily going through it all and gave her hope.
A mirage of pilots walked across the airfield towards the VHR tent. Emily held her hand up to block the sun from her eyes to get a better look at who was walking towards her. Her eyes locked onto a certain tall handsome Captain walking with his squad to her. She must have come into sight as the prince's tired expression turned into a beaming happy one. He broke free from the squad and jogged towards the awaiting doctor.
Emily's lips stretched into a smile at the mere sight of Harry. It had been days since she had seen the prince as their schedules were not in favor of them.
"Good evening, Dr. Clarke." Harry slowly closed in the distance between them, but stopped a healthy distance away from her. His eyes looked to see the evident exhaustion on her face amongst her natural beauty that was still shown through. He was in the air when the ambush happened and assisted with air strikes until they got the wounded out of the combat zone.
"Captain Wales." Emily bowed her head briefly out of respect for him.
"You look exhausted..." Harry's brow furrowed with concern for Emily. All he wished for in that moment was to embrace her in a tight hug. He had heard how tirelessly she had been working to save one of his own. A small smile crept up onto his lips out of pure admiration for Emily.
"I am..." Emily nodded slowly. "It's been a long -" She paused trying to remember how many hours it has been. Throwing her hands up in the air, "I don't even know if that is a sunrise or sunset at this point." The doctor laughed for a brief moment. "And I am still on call. Hannah sent me to get some sleep."
Harry shook his head at Emily. "Come, let's go get you some tea and find a pillow you can rest your head on." He waved the blonde beauty to follow alongside of him. "If you are lucky, I may even make you a cuppa."
