After pulling away from the station, the train came alive with the buzz of students chatting amongst one another. The ride to Hogwarts was pretty long but it went by quickly when Dara joined them. Every now and then a roar of laughter could be heard leaving their compartment. The sound of their joy floated into the aisle and was absorbed by the rest of the noise.
Eventually they made it to the station in Hogsmeade. They were greeted by a light refreshing drizzle of rain. The first years piled into boats and when they saw the castle, their eyes were as wide as the moon that hung above them. Everyone else got on the carriages and left. They were lucky the professors thought ahead and put the hoods on the carriages because on their way to the school, the drizzle turned into a downpour.
When they finally arrived everyone ran up the steps and into the castle to avoid anymore rain. As the students shuffled towards the Great Hall a yelp was heard ahead followed by some laughter. They instantly recognized it as Hermione and Harry. It was shortly followed by a big red balloon that seemed to be filled with water, dropping from above Ron.
"Peeves." Fred and George said in unison.
They were just about to enter the Great Hall when all the sudden one of the red balloons was aimed at them. They narrowly avoided getting hit as they ducked through the double doors. Their little group split up with Aspen and Arabella going to the left towards the Ravenclaw table and the boys and Dara to the right where the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff tables were.
As they approached the Ravenclaw table they saw a girl sitting with her face buried in a textbook and her long brown hair falling down the back of their robes. Even from across the Great Hall they recognized her. It was Luciana Rodriguez, she had been their roommate since second year when she transferred from Illvermorny. There was a guy sitting next to her probably around their age, but they couldn't really tell because they had their backs to them. Aspen lit up at the sight of her friend and the two girls rushed over to sit.
"LUCIANA!" Arabella and Aspen shouted in unison while they pulled her across the table into a hug.
"Where were you on the train?" Aspen asked while grabbing Luciana's textbook and flipping through the pages.
"Well I was in the prefects compartment." Luciana responded with her American accent which seemed so odd to hear after a few months.
"Congratulations Lu. We knew you would get it." Arabella congratulated her and turned to look at the boy next to them who was now looking right at Luciana.
Arabella tapped Luciana's foot under the table and nudged towards the boy.
"Oh! Um Aspen, Arabella this is Christopher he's the other prefect for our year. Chris this is Aspen and Arabella." Luciana said, introducing them to each other.
"I think we had potions together last year. It's nice to finally meet you." Aspen said to him.
"Nice to meet you Christopher." Arabella added.
"Please call me Chris." He responded with a warm smile.
They continued to chat when all the sudden the Great Hall fell silent at the sound of the double doors opening. It was followed by the sound of Professor McGonagall's leather shoes clicking against the stone floor and the light patter of the terrified first years walking behind her.
She placed a stool before them and the old sorting hat on top of it. The Great Hall was completely silent when one of the hats creases moved into the shape of a mouth. It began to sing. Each year the song was different from the last. When it finally finished Professor McGonagall began calling out names to be sorted.
