Chapter Eight

Vampires can’t be real.  If they are, that means that most of the mythical creatures I have read about and watched on TV are real.  Great!  And how did I not know that Mitchell was a vampire?  Why did he not tell me?  Ok, so I guess he couldn’t really tell me because then I would most likely freak out.  Plus there are probably rules about telling us mere mortals about them.  Oh wait, I’m no longer human.  Yay for me! Feel free to note the sarcasm dripping for my tone.  Just then I realise that Mum and Mitchell are just staring at me waiting for my answer.

“I’m now a vampire.  Creature of the night.”

I thought I would add that last bit to try and show that I held nothing against them.  Knowing Mum, she is probably going crazy with guilt for not asking me if it is what I wanted.

“I am so sorry baby! I didn’t want to lose you and then Mitchell came to me and said that you could stay with me forever and well, now you’re like him.”

“It is okay, trust me.  I would have done the same if it were you nearly dying.  I love you Mum.”

“I love you too gorgeous.”

She reached over and hugged me.  We stayed like that for a while, until we heard a cough.  Looking over Mum’s shoulder I saw Mitchell standing there.

“So, is there anything I need to know about being a vampire?  Do I sparkle or burn to death when I am in the sun?  Do I cry water or blood? Stupid question I was just crying and it was water.  Ooooh, can I read minds? Or turn into a bat?  Oh that would be so cool! I wonder if I can –

Before I go on, Mitchell clamps his hand over my mouth.  His face is full of amusement.

“One question at a time.  Now, there is quite a lot of new things that you need to get used to and no doubt, you will have billions of questions.  I will answer the ones you just asked and then I think you should drink.

To answer your first question no you will not sparkle nor will you burn to death in the sun. You have seen me in the sun so many times and neither has happened.  You will however, feel incredibly weak when the sun is up.  So you will wear this ring all the time. It was blessed by a dear friend of mine, she is a witch and it gives you strength when needed.

You answered your own question about crying water or blood.  I don’t know if you will be able to read minds, each vampire is different.  Some get extra abilities, some don’t.  That includes being able to turn into a bat.  Only some can.

I think it would be best if I train you in all things vampire before you and your Mum leave me.  It should take about a month.  I need to feel sure that you can protect not only yourself, but your Mum.  So we will check out of here and go out to the country.”

When he finished, my mind was swirling.  It was so much to take in.

“Wait, you are leaving?  Why?”

He looked at me with sad eyes.

“A dear friend of mine is in trouble and I need to help him.  You and your Mum can go anywhere in the world you like.  I will visit now and then.”

He was leaving.  I couldn’t believe it.  Before I could stop it, a single tear escaped my eye and feel onto my cheek.

“Now, now, no need to get upset at this moment.  We still have a month. Get changed so we can go meet your Mum in the foyer.  We are checking you out now.”

He promptly walked out the door.  I hesitantly sat up and put my feet on the floor.  It was only now that I realised how different everything was.  I could see everything as if in high definition, which I guess it is.  I could also hear way better.  I heard the subtle hum of the machines, the woman snoring next door, doctors talking outside somewhere, even the sound of my Mum gently sniffling.  It was incredible.  My body felt so strong as well, as though I was as solid as brick wall covered with 20 layers of titanium.  Yet, I didn’t feel heavy and weighed down.  I actually felt the complete opposite.  I felt as light as a feather.  Something smelt incredible.  I turned around in circles, trying to figure out where it was coming from.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

What was that?  It continued.  Something about the sound and the smell together made my throat burn.  I wanted to find it.  As I turned to find my clothes I caught my reflection in the mirror.  I froze on the spot.

Not only did I feel different, but I looked different. My once long, dark brown, slightly frizzy hair was now silky, wavy and had some natural high lights.  At least I thought they were natural.  My body was more toned and defined and OMG! I have boobs! Like not small, still growing boobs, but full on there in your face.  I continued to study myself in the mirror.  My skin wasn’t as

I quickly got changed and hurried out the door, following my Mum’s voice.  I round the corner and see her sitting next to Mitchell.  I walk up to them, and wait for them to say something.  When no one says anything I decide to break the awkward silence.

“C’mon teach.  I have a lot to learn in just a month.”
