When Toby first got to the mansion, he was told to watch out for EJ, since EJ was labled "dangerous" by everyone. Toby being who he was,  decided that he didn't give a fuck, and went and talked to EJ anyway. Toby saw how hurt EJ was that nobody trusted him, and made it his job to be EJ's friend. To this day Toby is EJ's best friend, and one of the only ones EJ has.
