-이에요 and -예요 have a similar meaning to that of the English verb "to be". The difference is in the sentence structure.
English structure: [be]+ABC
*ABC is a noun here. Ex: It is ABC / I am ABC.
Korean structure: ABC+[be]
*ABC is also a noun here. Ex: ABC예요 = It is ABC / I am ABC.
In English the verb "to be" is changed to "am", "are", or "is" depending on the subject, however, in Korean you decide to use -이에요 or -예요 depending on whether the last letter of the previous word is vowel or a consonant. If the previous word has a consonant use -이에요, if it has a vowel use 예요.
To make it a question raise the tone at the end of the sentence.
Ex: 물이에요. (It is water.)
물이에요↑? (Is it water?)
To say "This is ABC" add 이거. 이(this) + 것(thing) = 이것 → 이거.
Ex: 카메라예요. (It is a camera.)
이거 카메라예요. (This is a camera.)
A: 이거 뭐예요? (What is this?)
B: 이거 커피예요. (This is coffee.)
