CHAPTER 02 . THREE NO EVIL
( THE REPUTATION OF A THOUSAND YEARS MAY BE DETERMINED BY THE CONDUCT OF ONE HOUR. )
PRESENT DAY. MYSTIC FALLS, VIRIGNIA.
At first, the car ride had been overcome with an uncomfortable quietude in which each of the three vampires attempted to process the chaotic nature of the events they had just witnessed. It was one thing to have to deal with your occasional deranged bloodsucker; i.e, Katherine Pierce and friends. It was another to be tossed into the path of the oldest family of vampires that, evidently, cannot be killed with the well-known methods of decapitation, stakes to the heart, or simply tearing out the organ. Penelope's leg bounced up and down unceasingly and she continuously tapped her fingernail against the armrest on the car door, watching the world pass by her as if they didn't relate to the three's pesky little problem, which was facing their impending doom, of course.
"Would you cut that out? God, you're annoying," Damon had hissed without so much as sparing her a side-glance. Penelope rolled her eyes and huffed out restlessly, but halted her jittery movement nonetheless. Conveniently, their road trip to Mystic Falls brought up a multitude of memories that she was stuck with thinking about for the rest of the agonizing ride; most of which she did not want to remember.
And so she decided to distract herself by talking, even if that conversation buddy happened to be Damon Salvatore, who had a habit of cringing at the sound of her voice. "Do you happen to know a Jenna Sommers?"
"It just so happens that I do! She's my brother's girlfriend's aunt, who happens to be dating said girlfriend's history teacher, who tried to kill me because I had presumably killed his now-vampire wife who he thought was dead." Although the two weren't fond of each other, the brunette couldn't help but snort at the sheer sarcasm dripping from his mouth while he spoke. He strained his lips into a forced smile, clearly displeased with the chaotic irony ravaging his life. "And how do you know our lovely Jenna?"
Penelope sighed. "We were both psych majors at Whitmore, and she told me she used to live in Mystic Falls. Did she ever go back? I wonder if I'll see her." She had mumbled the last sentence under her breath, though it was admittedly unnecessary considering both passengers possessed an inhuman hearing ability and heard her loud and clear. If she were going to be stuck in that godforsaken place again for quite a while, Jenna would be a welcome silver lining. She had always been nice to her in college, and the two had a lot of fantastic memories together — and they didn't all involve dancing drunkenly on top of tables at frat parties.
"You will. She's the aforementioned girlfriend's current guardian." Damon shook his wrist and checked his watch impatiently, very obviously wanting to put as much distance between them as possible; and the sooner they arrived to the town, the faster he got to do that.
