Aspenpaw was trailing in the forest with her brothers, Dockpaw and Oakpaw. Only a quarter-moon had passed since they'd been apprenticed.

Aspenpaw's mentor was Dewsplash, who they were actually related. His mate was Snowfur, which was Aspenpaw's, Dockpaw's, and Oakpaw's kin.

"What are we doing? Hunting?" Oakpaw gave an excited bounce. His mentor, Duskheart, twitched his whiskers in amusement.

"No. We're learning about MountainClan's worst enemies." He replied.

"SeracClan and FjordClan?" Aspenpaw questioned. Dockpaw's mentor, Owlpoppy, swallowed a snort. "Bears," Owlpoppy corrected her.

They walked in awkward silence until they reached their designated area away from the clan. "There are two types of bears," Dewsplash started. "Grizzly bears and black bears."

Aspenpaw once heard a tale from Milkscar that once a mother grizzly bear invaded the camp. Milkscar had told her that bears were huge, bigger than Twolegs.

Aspenpaw shivered, then straightened herself. Don't worry. Milkscar always exaggerates.

"Black bears have long claws like us," Duskheart added. "So that means they can climb trees."

"But they won't attack you just because you are afraid." Owlpoppy assured them. "Black bears are slightly smaller then grizzly bears."

"And if you see one, run and don't climb a tree." Duskheart commented, leaping on a small red oak branch. "And don't hesitate to report to the camp."

"Now, grizzly bears are the bigger problem..." Owlpoppy's voice drifted away as Aspenpaw kept thinking about something else.

The time they went back to camp, Aspenpaw went straight toward her mother, Rosepelt. The dark ginger she-cat was sitting next to the fresh-kill pile, finishing a morsel of a bird with her sister, Snowfur.

Once she had gone, Aspenpaw caught Rosepelt's eye and sat beside her.

"Hi! How was your training?" She purred. Aspenpaw hesitated before blurting, "Do you think Sootkit will come back?"

Rosepelt paused for a while. She then stood up and shook her head. "Sadly... no. I'll see you later!"

Rosepelt padded toward Snowfur, and Aspenpaw couldn't help thinking,

She knows something. She is like a rose. Gentle and pretty on the outside, but carries some hidden thorns.
