One afternoon, Robin said, 'There is nothing to eat. I am going to kill a deer.' He picked up his bow and arrows and he walked away among the trees. The sun shone brightly, and Robin whistled because he was very happy.
Robin looked for a deer all afternoon, but he did not find one.
'I shall go back to the camp,' he thought. 'I cannot find a deer.' He walked along a path at the stream, and then he came to a narrow bridge. It was made of logs and it was very narrow.
Robin began to walk across the bridge. Then he saw a man at the other end of the bridge. The man was tall and broad. He had a long staff in his head.
'Get off the bridge,' Robin shouted angrily. 'And let me pass.'
'Certainly not,' replied the tall man. 'You must move for me.'
They began to fight on the middle of the bridge. Robin struck the tall man with his staff. Then the man srtuck Robin. They were fighting for a long time. At last, the tall man struck Robin on the head, and Robin fell into the water.
Robin swam to the bank, and the tall man pulled him out of the water.
'What is your name?' asked Robin.
'John Naylor,' the man replied. 'But my friends call me John the Little.'
'And I am Robin Hood,' said the outlaw. Then Robin blew his bugle three times, and twenty men dressed in green suits came out of the forest.
'These are my men,' said Robin. 'We are all outlaws. Will you come to live with us in the forest?'
'Yes, certainly,' replied the tall man.
'Men,' said Robin. 'This is John the Little.'
'We will call him Little John,' said the men. 'We are glad that he will live with us.'
