Two months later...
Kelly stared out at the expanse of the Martian desert before her, her eyes settling on a newly constructed dome.
"Stargazing during the daytime?"
She turned to see Mark behind her. They had both sneaked up the communications tower to get a view of the dome housing the half-built hyperdrive. The Plexiglass dome was transparent, allowing anyone outside to get a clear view of the hyperdrive prototype inside. Two other research projects were ongoing at the Capital and a base up North.
"No, dummy. I'm getting a good view of the half-built hyperdrive."
He put an arm around her and passed her a small pair of holobinoculars. For a moment, it felt that all was well and the world was perfect.
The hyperdrive project, if it succeeded would yield results beyond anyone's dreams. Access to worlds thought habitable, to the depths of the galaxy and possibly one day, to other sentient life forms.
The future was brighter than ever.
