I pulled into Nick's driveway and put it in park. We hopped out and walked to the front door.
"Hey Clay!" His mom said from the kitchen. She walked in and gave me a hug. I smiled and hugged back. She had been a mother to me since kindergarten, and I was glad to have her. She pulled away and put her hands on my cheeks.
"What happened to your eye honey?" She asked, looking up at me, her hands still on my face.
"Nothing, i'm alright."
She nodded and put her hands down. She walked back into the kitchen.
"Do you boys want anything to eat? Clay how did you like that sandwich today, I made something different." Nick and I walked into the kitchen, sitting down at the island.
"I liked it a lot." She smiled and placed her hands on the white marble countertop.
"Ok good i'm glad. Want something to drink? We have lemonade!"
Nick and I nodded as I felt my phone buzz in my pocket. I pulled it out to see I had received a text from an unknown number. I pressed my thumb to the home button and opened my messages.
Unknown Number:
Hey Clay, it's George from school. Sorry to bother you but Nick gave me your number at lunch. Would you be able to give me a ride to school tomorrow? My mom is working late and I want to let her sleep.I looked up from my phone and over to Nick, who was looking at me while drinking his lemonade that his mom slid in front of him.
"You gave George my number?" He nodded as he swallowed the lemonade he had in his mouth. "Why?"
"He needed a ride tomorrow so I gave him your number."
"Who is this George fellow?" Nick's mom had put her forearms onto the countertop and leaned closer to us.
"He's a new kid at school. He's British too." Nick said, smiling. His mom smiled at the same time as him.
"That is so exciting, a new friend for you boys."
I rolled my eyes and looked back down at my phone, my thumbs hovered over the keyboard.
Me:
Yea sure just send me your address, i'll be there around 7:15.The three dots that meant he was typing popped up almost immediately after I had hit send.
Unknown Number:
Thank you so much.He sent his address as well, so I closed out the message and picked up my glass, taking small sips.
"You look pale Clay, are you dehydrated?" Nick's mom blurted out.
Nick slapped a hand over his mouth to prevent the lemonade from being spit out. He swallowed it quickly and smacked the counter, laughing hysterically.
"No mom he just doesn't go outside."
I laughed slightly too, mainly at the sight of Nick struggling to breathe due to how hard he had been laughing.
"Alright let's go upstairs." Nick said, getting off of his seat and wiping a tear away from his eye. He took deep breaths, trying to catch his breath from laughing. I stood up to follow him, but was stopped by Nick's mom.
"Are you staying for dinner Clay?"
"Yea sure why not."
"Nick and you need to get some homework done while you're up there then, alright?"
Nick rolled his eyes and nodded. "Yea alright mom."
I nodded as well and followed Nick up the stairs into his room. I threw my backpack onto the floor and plopped into a blue beanbag chair that sat in front of his TV.
