Ai was found as a baby by her adoptive parents who were visiting the Shinto shrine to pray for the protection of their missing daughter. Her new family found a clear birthmark on her forehead that was shaped like the Kanji symbol for protection (戍).
Ai was brought home and welcomed into the small family.
She was raised by her parents and older brother Daichi, to be independent and trained to protect herself.
The village they resided by had a recurring issue with young women and girls being kidnapped by a human trafficking ring known as Akuma sākuru which is translated to The Demon's Circle. Due to crooked town officials, no arrests were ever made and the recovery of the missing girls was slim to none.
Ai was born with sensitive senses making it easy for her to dodge any attack (basically insanely strong sense of seeing and hearing making it generally impossible to sneak up on her)
When she was 8 years old her family's Dojo was broken into by a group of men who members of The Demon's Circle intended to kidnap Ai with any means necessary.
Her parents were able to distract the kidnappers long enough for Ai's brother to escape through the window while carrying her. Just in time for multiple thunderous gunshots to echo through the air.
Thinking quickly Daichi carried Ai into the dense forest that resided behind their home and ran. He ran for what felt like hours, he quickly hid her under the large tree that had a small enough space under its roots for her to slip into. After successfully hiding her Daichi quickly turned a different direction in hopes of leading the men away from his little sister. The kidnappers went after Daichi leaving Ai alone in the dense dark forest. After dawn broke Ai slipped out from the ropes and carefully trekked through the forest looking for her older brother worried about his wellbeing. After wandering around for an hour, she accidentally tripped over Daichi who was grasping now bleeding abdomen from a single gunshot wound and covered in bruises.
Daichi's final words "Ai... what are you doing here? I told you to get away from here." "Ai, I know you'll grow to be a beautiful young woman and... I don't want anyone to hurt you, but I know we've trained you well. The world can be so dangerous especially when you're a girl. There are disgusting people out there that will pray on the weak. At least I can die knowing that you can protect yourself. There's a place I want you to go to. An old friend of mine is a priestess at a Shinto shrine that offers sanctuary to women and girls. It'll take a while to get there but I know you'll get there. I used to offer sparing lessons to the Miko that resided there. Ai there are some amazing people out there. They might be hard to find, but once you find them don't ever let them go. Before we found it I had another little sister and she was taken by those thugs... I wasn't able to protect her then but when we found you it was like the gods had given us a second chance. You were our second chance Ai." "Don't cry Ai if I went back in time I would do it all over again. You don't get many second chances in life and you were our second chance. You saved us from falling apart. You'll forever be my second chance at life."
Ai's superpowers were awoken out of the despair over the loss of her older brother and nearly passes out from it.

After a few days of walking, Ai was able to find the Shinto shrine her brother told her about and was given refuge by the eldest Miko of the shrine Yuna. Yuna took Ai under her wing and trained her to become a Miko. After seeing Ai's abilities Yuno told her that she was directly blessed by the gods. Ai was able to fully complete her training 12 years later after she turned 20 years old. Ai decided to set out to seek revenge on the group responsible for her family's slaughter who were referred to as Akuma sākuru. Translated to The Demon's Circle.
