Backstory: When Ai was an infant, she was left by the entrance of an abandoned Shinto shrine. The couple who found her were mourning the abduction of their youngest daughter and was visiting the shrine to pray to Amaterasu-Ōmikami for the protection of their youngest daughter. The couple decided to bring her to their home and raise her as their daughter. Her older adoptive brother and father started training her at a young age to ensure that history wouldn't repeat itself. Ai was trained in swordsmanship with a katana, hand to hand combat and stealth. Ai was able to advance in her training quickly being able to surpass her father's expectations. One day while walking with her older brother she was able to see what looked like a flickering flame hovering in the air on the side of the road. Curious she let go of her brothers' hand and ran towards the flickering flame only to find it hovering over the corpse of a young woman. This was when she realized that she had the ability to see the dead. The next day a group of strangers broke into her home and killed her family after her parents refused to give them Ai. Her brother told her to run before sacrificing himself to protect her. Ai didn't stop running even after the fast and heavy footsteps of her pursuers disappeared, even after the sun had set. Ai didn't stop running until the sun had risen and her legs finally gave out from exhaustion. Later in the day, a young woman named Himari who was a Miko at the Ise Grand Shrine quickly carried her to the shrine.
