Rapunzel x Eugene (Tangled)

Rapunzel woke up abruptly to the feeling of two strong, callused hands on her shoulders, gently shaking her awake. She slowly sat up, stretching as she slowly opened her eyes. Sitting in front of her was a very happy Eugene, practically vibrating from excitement with a huge grin on his face. 

"Wha?" Rapunzel muttered, squinting as her eyes slowly adjusted to the light. 

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" Eugene practically screamed as he jumped up from the bed. 

He grabbed both of Rapunzel's hands, pulling her out of bed and into a warm embrace. Rapunzel, still half asleep, buried her face in Eugene's chest, wrapping her arms around his neck. Her eyes fluttered closed as she leaned into Eugene, hoping to get a few more precious minutes of sleep. 

Eugene wrapped his arms around Rapunzel's waist, picking her up and spinning her around before gently setting her down in front of her closet. 

"Eugeeennnneeeee," Rapunzel whined, eyeing the bed with longing.

"No more sleep! It's your birthday, and I have a lot planned!" Eugene said. "Now get dressed! The first surprise is downstairs!" 

He practically ran out of the room, Rapunzel following after him a few minutes later. 

Rapunzel headed downstairs and gasped at the surprise that was waiting for her. Eugene had set up a beautifully decorated breakfast buffet, complete with all of Rapunzel's favorite toppings.

"Oh, Eugene!" Rapunzel gushed, running into his arms. "Thank you," she said into his chest, and his heart melted a little. Even after three years, she could still do that to him. He squeezed her tighter and closed his eyes, his love for the brunette in his arms almost suffocating him.

He reluctantly pulled away and led her to a fancy table on the balcony with Pascal sitting in the middle of it, who was the same shade of purple as the flower in his hands. Rapunzel laughed, picking up Pascal and the flower, and turned to Eugene. He gently took the flower from her hand and placed it behind her ear. Rapunzel blushed. 

"I love you, Rapunzel," Eugene said.

"I love you too, Eugene."

~time skip~

After a full day of presents, activities, and surprises, Rapunzel was exhausted. Expecting to be led back to the castle, Rapunzel was surprised as Eugene pulled her towards the dock, the same boat from three years ago gently swaying from the waves. Rapunzel gasped. Eugene smiled and helped Rapunzel onto the boat, then started rowing towards the middle of the lake. 

Rapunzel stared eagerly at the castle, waiting for the first lantern to be released. She gasped as she saw a golden glow slowly float upwards. Soon, hundreds of lanterns decorated the night sky, illuminating Rapunzel's face with a soft golden glow. She stared at the sky in awe, remembering how magical it was to see the lanterns for the first time. She thinks about how much has changed since that night, smiling to herself. She was home. 

She heard shuffling next to her and turned to face Eugene, who seemed to be having trouble taking something out of his pocket. He looked up, feeling Rapunzel's gaze, and froze. His eyes filled with panic as he tried to inconspicuously shove the thing back into his pocket. Instead, it flew out of his pocket and tumbled to the floor of the boat. Rapunzel noticed it was a small black box covered in velvet. Eugene lunged toward the box and scooped it up, trying and failing to hide it from Rapunzel. She gave him a confused look, glancing at the hand that was holding the box, and Eugene sighed. 

"I-I was hoping you would stare at the lanterns for a little longer," Eugene said, the hand that wasn't holding the box reaching behind his neck. He gave Rapunzel a sheepish look, his eyes not meeting her gaze.

"I guess I'm doing this now," Eugene muttered, finally looking up and locking eyes with Rapunzel. He shakily knelt in front of her, wobbling slightly from the unsteadiness of the boat. Rapunzel grinned, finally realizing what was happening. 

Eugene cleared his throat, trying to calm his nerves. He held out the velvet box with a shaky hand and gently opened it, displaying a beautiful ring. The ring was rose gold with small diamonds surrounding a beautiful pink heart-shaped stone. Small diamonds decorated the band and the light from the lanterns around them gave the ring a magical glow. 

Rapunzel gasped and her hands covered her mouth, tears forming in her eyes. Eugene swallowed hard and opened his mouth to speak. 

"Rapunzel," he said, his voice cracking slightly. He cleared his throat and tried again. 

"Rapunzel, when we first met, I had no idea that I had just met the love of my life. When we met, I was Flynn Ryder, a wanted criminal, and you demanded that I take you to see the floating lights. I was reluctant at the start, but somewhere along our journey, I fell in love with you. You helped me see that being Eugene Fitzherbert is better than being Flynn Ryder. You are my dream, Rapunzel. Every day I fall a little bit more in love with you, and every day I can't believe I was lucky enough to find you. I love you so much, Rapunzel. Will you marry me?"

Rapunzel nodded frantically, tears now freely streaming down her face.

 "Of course, Eugene, I will marry you."

 Eugene's eyes lit up and he reached for Rapunzel's left hand, gently sliding the ring onto her finger. Rapunzel suddenly squealed and lunged at Eugene, wrapping him in a bone-crushing hug. The boat swayed violently as they both tumbled to the bottom of the boat. 

"I love you, Eugene Fitzherbert."

"I love you too, Rapunzel."

Eugene pulled her into a passionate kiss, wrapping his arms around her waist. Rapunzel laced her fingers through his hair and kissed him lovingly. When they broke apart, Rapunzel was grinning. 

"What are you smiling about, Blondie?"

Rapunzel sighed, her eyes alight with joy. "I just can't wait to be Mrs. Fitzherbert."

Eugene's heart raced at her words and he pulled her into another kiss. 

Mrs. Rapunzel Fitzherbert. 

Their future never seemed so bright.
