Chapter 2 - What New Kid?

2 years later...

Summers in Canada are blissful, considering the fact that we're targeted by our cold, harsh winters for the majority of the year.

Seriously, we should have some sort of slogan like, Canada. Come for the freedom, stay for the cold weather!

Crystal and I are seated in my backyard, barefooted and soaking up what little rays that remained before dusk. My toes curl in the grass felt so comforting. A sweet breeze ruffles our hair - the first sign that summer is coming to an end.

I camped out in my house for a whole two months with no regrets whatsoever.
I dragged my ass right across the finish line last year, but it was worth it. Such a despicable thought that I had taken time out of my summer to study and get prepped for possibly one of the most important years in my life.

Right now, my I was in this perfectly balanced position, and I was determined to keep it that way.

I stretched across the lawn to grab my can of ice cold coke and take a sip. Ah, refreshing.

"We're all growing old!" My best friend suddenly cries out dramatically.

I throw my shades on top of my head and silently pray for them to stay up there.

Curse you no-grip sunglasses!

"Thank you Captain Obvious!" I exclaim to the darkening sky. I know it feels as though we are shedding out of our childhood too fast, but there is no need to give unnecessary reminders!

Crystal flips over on to her stomach and comes face to face with me. Her long, dirty blond hair settles on her back spilling, over her shoulders. "But can you believe it? One more year, 12 more months until we're out of here for good!"

"Technically Crys, it's about 10 more months since we don't count the two month break."

She merely shrugs at me and tells me to shut up.

I feel a prickle travel across my skin, which only means that the mosquitos are about to have us for a late night snack.

Mosquitos are a b*tch.

"I need to get some bug spray out here before we're eaten alive." I mutter under my breath as I heave myself off the ground.

"Your phobia of bugs is so amusing you know, you get all paranoid." She comments with a snicker.

"Paranoid for good reasons! Do you want to run the risk of catching a possible deadly disease?" I retort.

"Only if you'll be there waiting at my hand and foot, then it will be all worth while!" She calls to me as I wave her off dismissively and go inside to find the bug spray.

"Like malaria is really going to get you, health freak." I hear her murmur from behind and with that I roll my eyes.

When I slide the screen door aside, the AC blasts cool air into my face; I almost shiver from the abrupt temperature change.

"MOM!" I holler, hoping that she'll hear me from upstairs.

A couple seconds later a hear someone screech just as loud, "YES?"

"WHERE'S THE BUG SPRAY?!"

"I DON'T KNOW, FIND IT YOURSELF!"

I groan a little with exasperation. It's then I hear the squeeks and patters of my mom making her way downstairs.

Before I even get a chance to ask again she interrupts, "I'm not here to be your maid and find your bug spray."

I nod back at her expactantly, assuming that she wanted to tell me something important worth discussing face to face without the screaming.
