As the pair made their way down the road, and Led Zeppelin softly filled the Impala with a comfortable silence, Dean glanced over at Castiel.
The angel had his hands folded neatly in his lap and had his head slightly turned so he could see out the windshield and out the passenger window. Even from where Dean sat, he could see the hypnotizing blue of Castiel's eyes illuminating, making them seem even brighter.
Dean turned away before Cas could notice, but looked back whenever he got a chance.
Then Dean started to think. He thought about how much he had missed Cas and how it had made him react, knowing that he may be gone forever.
He thought about how ecstatic he was when he saw that Cas had come back. He smiled at that.
But then he thought about his father. What would John say to this? This caused an unsettling, nervous feeling in the pit of his stomach.
Dean Winchester used to want nothing more than for his father to be proud of him. Was him taking a liking to another man going to ruin everything he had hoped for?
Dean's thoughts were interrupted by Castiel as he said, "Where are we going, Dean?"
Hearing Castiel's voice was enough to push any negative thoughts of out Dean's head. He grinned and turned to look at his angel and said with a wink, "You'll see."

After about ten more minutes of driving, Dean rounded a corner onto a gravel road.
Many more twists and turns led them to a cave opening. Dean was grinning ear to ear as he stopped the car and got out. Castiel was confused, but curious. He looked at Dean and said, "What's in there?"
"Well, it wouldn't be much fun if I ruined the surprise, now, would it?" he said. Dean grabbed a basket from the backseat of the car and motioned for Castiel to follow him to the entrance of the cave.
They both stopped before entering. They didn't know why, but it just felt like something was missing.
And it was found, with great joy, as Dean laced his fingers with Castiel's. Both had wondered what this would feel like, clinging onto each other. But they could never have anticipated the sheer happiness it brought both of them.
They turned towards each other, both blushing slightly, and smiled as they made their way into the cave.
It wasn't too long before the other end of the cave was visible, thanks to the sun.
Castiel stopped in his tracks when he saw where he was.
About ten yards from the cave was a cliff. It looked out onto a lake. The sun shown on the water in such a way, entrancing all who look upon it.
Birds were singing sweetly in the trees above and not a speck of sadness or negativity could be detected. It was breathtaking.
Castiel looked over at Dean and said, "How did you find this place?"
Dean, too, was enchanted by the place, even though he had been there before.
"I was out scouting around when we first found the bunker, just to see what was around. I found that cave opening," he said, gesturing to the cave, "and I went in. Not even Sam knows about this place."
The pair stood, hand in hand, admiring the beauty of the place for a few more moments, breathing in the scent of life before it was taken away, like every other good thing that seemed to come their way.
Dean gave Castiel's hand a light squeeze before releasing it.
From the basket he pulled out a blanket and spread it across the ground. He then retreived two bottles of beer.
Castiel smiled at the thought of Dean doing all of this for him.
Cas sat down next to Dean and accepted the beer.
Opening it, Dean sliced a deep cut into the crease of his palm. He winced as the blood trickled down to his wrist.
Castiel grabbed a napkin from the basket and traced the blood back up its path along Dean's arm. Once all the blood was cleaned up, Cas touched his fingers to the wound and Dean grinned as it disappeared from sight.
Castiel began to move his hand away, but Dean grabbed it, keeping it in its place. Dean couldn't explain it, he just felt that Castiel's hand belonged in his, that he belonged with him.
A sea of blue met with a forest of green, and everything around them seemed to fly away, or maybe it was them, flying far away from everything that would tear them apart.
And neither of them wanted to go back.
And suddenly, they were both moving closer to each other, closer to the only thing that had been on either of their minds for God knows how long. They were mere inches apart, and could feel each other's breath on their lips.
There was no going back now. Dean felt as though all the stars in the sky could not shine brighter than Castiel's eyes.
And Castiel felt that if he were to stop this moment, he would regret it as long as he lived, and there was no telling how long that was going to be.
The moment their eyes fluttered shut and their lips touched, ever so slightly, they were both thinking the same thing, and that was that this was something to savor, something to fight for, something to never let anything bad happen to. There was nothing more important than right here, right now.
When they did pull apart, they searched each other's eyes for signs of either acceptance or rejection.
They both started to smile at the same time, and as their smiles grew wider, they joined their lips together again, with as much passion as they could muster.
They moved their heads to the side to deepen the kiss, not daring to break contact.
Dean brought his other hand up to cup Castiel's face, and Cas rested the hand that wasn't in Dean's softly of Dean's side.
And in this moment, both men forgot about everything bad that had ever happened.
They forgot about everyone they'd lost, everything they'd screwed up, and everything that made them feel worthless.
They simply savored the taste of each other, and knew that if they were to die right there and then, no regrets would be admitted to.
When they eventually broke apart for air, both were speechless. Castiel positioned himself so that he was sitting upright next to Dean, their shoulders lightly touching.
They fell into a comfortable silence and watched the sun slowly sink to the ground.
After a long while of quiet, Dean finally got the chance to ask something that had been on his mind since Castiel got out of his head. "How'd you get out, Cas?"
Cas sighed and hesitated before telling Dean the truth about his escape, but Dean deserved to know it.
So he said, "While I was in you head, I saw through your eyes, and every book you simply glanced at, even if it was just the spine of a book sitting on a shelf, I was able to picture its pages. I eventually came across an incantation from an old book sitting in your basement. There was spell about freeing someone from the mind of another. And all I needed was...was, uh..."
Dean looked over and said, "Needed what?"
"I needed a promise. A genuine promise made directly from the person that means the most to me. I guess it's extremely lucky that the person that means to the most to me was also the one I was trapped inside."
Dean looked out to the setting sun and smiled. "I really mean that much to you, huh?"
Castiel leaned his head against Dean's shoulder and said with a smile, "All that much and more, my friend."
