There were no words flexible enough to describe the utter lack of oxygen Dean's brain was getting.
The moment those words left his tongue, his breath caught in his throat. And the fact that Castiel's face showed almost no emotion at all was not helping.
Castiel simply tilted his head to the side in a confused state and thought before he spoke.
"Dean, if I am not confused, 'dating' is what you do with someone you admire. Someone you like, uh, more than a friend," he said, a glimmer of hope in his voice.
Dean searched Castiel's eyes for any sign of acceptance before he responded.
"Uhm, y-yea," he said, chuckling slightly when Castiel's eyes lit up slightly.
"That's exactly what I'm saying, Cas. I-I don't know exactly what I'm feeling or what it means...but if you're alright with it, I'd like to give it a try. And you know me, I'm not exactly nervous when it comes to this stuff. But I'm freaking out right now...and I don't know why I'm saying this all out loud but I think you're different...a good kind of different and I'm sorry to put all this on you right after you get back but I don't think I could have waited any longer."
Dean was shocked at what had come out of his mouth.
He had practically poured his heart out to his best friend, something he didn't do often. He wasn't sure what kind of a response he was going to get, but something about it just felt...right.
And if Dean could only live one more day on this earth and only do one more thing that would define his legacy, he would do what feels right.
And right now, what felt right was to pursue a life-long wonder, a fantasy that seemed too unruly to become reality. But it felt right.
Dean was starting to get nervous now.
Normally when a girl would turn him down, he would play the Your loss card and still walk away with his dignity in tact. But the tables were turned when it came to Castiel. If Castiel turned him down, not only would their entire friendship be flushed down the drain, but he would be heartbroken.
Whatever this was he was feeling, rejection would put him through hell. And he'd been put through quite enough hell in his life.
Castiel noticed that he had not responded for a while and cleared his throat before he spoke up.
"I would love to, Dean."
And at that, the Winchester's heart dropped to his knees and grew wings all at once.
An immense smile painted his face and he jumped to his feet, leaving the angel in an even more confused state than before.
He tilted his head to the side and said, "I take it you're happy, then?"
Dean full-on laughed, something he hadn't done in a long time. This angel really could change him for the better.
"Of course I'm happy! Oh, thank you so much, Cas. I can't wait! Be ready tomorrow night at six, okay?"
There were not enough words in the English language descriptive enough for Castiel to string together a sentence depicting how amazing it felt to make Dean happy.
He had absolutely no idea how humans interacted on dates. He didn't even know they were called 'dates.'
But kindling this flame that he thought Dean had never looked at twice was something Castiel was more than willing to do.
Mind you, Castiel has little to no perception of human feelings. So when he first started to think of Dean as...more than a friend, he was slightly scared. He had no idea what they meant or what he was supposed to do with them.
He was planning on telling Dean soon, but his plans were averted when Dean stepped forward first. And it made his incredibly happy.
He was going on a date with Dean Winchester.
Holy hell... he thought. I'm going on a date with Dean Winchester.
~
The night had finally arrived, and it couldn't come soon enough. Dean and Cas had purposefully stayed out of each other's way throughout the day so they wouldn't psych themselves out.
Castiel didn't have a clue as to how to prepare, so all did was shower and wait.
Dean, on the other hand, was on the brink of insanity.
It was nearly 3 o'clock and he had no idea where he was taking Castiel. The movies seemed too ordinary, and a dinner-date may as well only be a party of one, seeing as Cas didn't eat.
Dean was pulling his hair out of his head waiting for the perfect idea to come to him.
And it did.
Dean smiled to himself and anticipated seeing the look on Castiel's face.
As the clock rolled around to six, Dean and Castiel made their way to the front door. They both had swarms of butterflies buzzing about in their stomachs, but neither would let it show.
They nearly turned back until they saw each other.
They locked eyes and instantly forgot about any nerves they were feeling. The simple glance from the other was all the reassurance they needed that everything was going to be fine, and tonight was going to be life-changing.
"Ready to go?" Dean asked, not breaking eye contact with Castiel.
Castiel smiled, making Dean's heart flutter. "Definitely."
As they made their way to the car, Dean felt a smile creeping up. He didn't know why, but maybe he did.
This man he was inviting into his life meant so much to him, and losing him once almost brought about his end.
He thought about a future with Castiel and it made his life seem so much more worth living.
His sexuality had never been an issue for him before. Was he really willing to accept new parts of himself and expand his horizons, even if it meant dealing with criticism and fear? Was he really willing to let all the bad in with the good?
As he looked over at Castiel, who was also smiling, he made up his mind.
Hell yeah, he was.
