Sirius and I make our way back to the common room, snickering about McGonagall as we give the Fat Lady the password.

"After you, Snuffles," he says, smirking as I roll my eyes.

"Oh, we are not letting that catch on." I shake my head, nevertheless climbing through the portrait hole and evidently straight into hell.

"—YOU BITCH! I HATE YOU!"

"Mary, I'm sorry. I—I just wanted to get back at you for what you said at breakfa—"

"SHUT UP! I NEVER WANT TO TALK TO YOU AGAIN!"

I duck as a lamp is thrown across the room at Marlene, and Lily and Alice try to soothe the rampaging Mary, who has tears streaming down her face. Everyone else stands off to the side, looking ashy faced and tired.

"YOU ARE A SHIT FRIEND," Mary screams, "AND A SHIT PERSON! AND I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU!"

She storms off, sobbing loudly as she rushes up the stairs. We all watch her go, and then everyone slowly looks back to me and Sirius. He's got his hand on my back, and James shakes his head solemnly.

"Never break up again," he says in a quiet voice as we walk further into the room.

"What happened?" I dare ask, watching as Marlene collapses into armchair and buries her face in her hands.

"I hooked up with Dean," she mumbles, and my mouth falls open.

"Mar, you didn't," I whisper, and then she begins to cry.

"I just—" She sobs, "I-I wanted to get b-back at her for wh-what she said."

We all look at each other. We've been standing by for months as Mary swooned over Dean; she really likes him.

Mary and Marlene have always been best friends. If you'd ask them to choose one other person in the group to save from a house fire, they'd choose each other. It's the same with Alice and Lily. You can't imagine them ever fighting. It's as if the stars are suddenly out of place.

"You guys are back together?" Remus asks, looking away from the crying Marlene. Sirius and I look at each other and nod; the announcement seems bittersweet.

"Dorcas I'm sorry I told the whole Great Hall about you and Dedalus," Lily suddenly blurts out, looking close to tears herself. Dorcas waves her off.

"Don't sweat it Evans. My reputation is too strong to be broken down by word of a messy hookup," she says, and Lily looks relieved, clearly not wanting something like what's happened between Mary and Marlene to happen to her.

"Oh thank god."

"Look, Alice," Dorcas then says, and Alice glances at her, looking as if she too might cry, "Longbottom and you are great together, and I shouldn't have made fun of that. All right?"

Alice smiles warmly, "Thanks, Dorcas."

The moment is nice, and I feel relieved that apologies have been given and we're almost all okay.

James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter all look at each other as the girls' words hang in the air.

"We good?" James asks, and they all shrug.

"Yeah."

"Yep."

"How sweet," I say dryly, rolling my eyes at how pathetic their moment was compared to ours.

"She's never gonna forgive me," whines Marlene, and I look to Remus, expecting him to step in with a way to help. He just shakes his head as if saying 'this isn't my forte'.
