THEY'RE ALL STILL HERE

After three days of being sick with a fever, all Abby wanted to do was get up and explore the whole fortress in one day. She was tired of lying around in her room or on the library couches. It was great that she had plenty of books to read, but after a while of sitting around, she tended to get restless.

However, Kai was constantly insisting that she rested until the fever went away completely; because, of course, if the simple sickness got out of hand, Abby could end up in a hospital. That was another thing she hated - that her health could go spiraling out of hand just because she didn't wrap herself in a blanket when she had a cold. Both she and her mother were like that, and it bothered Abby to no bounds.

She knew that she had to take care of herself, but she was very tired of lazing around. She wanted to be around her friends and family, to hold friendly conversations with some of the former Darks that she was acquainted with, and to cuddle with her boyfriend.

Abby knew Kai would gladly have cuddled with her at any given time, but she also didn't want to get him sick. It was quite hilarious when he got sick, but she would feel horrible if she spread the fever to him. Plus, he was busy lending a helping hand to rebuilding a structure that collapsed due to a poor foundation near the eastern border of the fortress.

Pretty much every capable guy was there, and even a few stronger women had volunteered to help out. Shintaro, Kai, Gabriel, Ezekiel, and even Falte had gone out this morning to resume the construction, with Linda, Cynthia, and a few other men that Abby didn't recognize.

So she was lying on one of the couches in the library, absentmindedly flipping through a fantasy book that she'd started reading the other day. She couldn't bring her mind to focus on the words on the pages, so she was fiddling with the papers and skimming the ink halfheartedly.

It was almost lunch, which was when the men had promised to be back so that some of the women could fix them something to eat, and Abby was eagerly awaiting her friends' return. She hadn't been able to check her own fever, since there weren't any thermometers anywhere, but she was feeling like herself again; so she guessed that she was all right now.

She was ready to leap into Kai's arms and hug him like she'd never hugged him before.

When she heard the loud laughter and hum of voices coming from farther downstairs, Abby threw the book aside and hurried to her feet. Thankfully, she didn't even feel the least bit lightheaded when she got up, which was good sign. Smiling cheerfully, she sped through the aisles and out of the library door.

After descending several flights of stairs and even going through one hallway twice somehow, she finally made it down to the large cafe, where several men and women were gathered. There were a few sitting down and chatting formally, but most of them were standing up and laughing heartily while occasionally shoving each other around. They were dirty and ruffled, but they looked to be in high spirits.

As she walked toward them, Abby quickly searched around the room for her friends and breathed a happy sigh when she found them gathered around one of the round tables. Linda was seated in a chair, a rare, wide smile on her face as she listened to something that Falte was saying. Gabriel looked like he was giggling but trying to hide it - one hand was folded over his mouth, but his eyes were definitely showing his smile. Ezekiel was shaking his head, but strangely, he was smiling too. Shintaro, even stranger, had his arms wrapped around his stomach and was laughing so heartily that Abby was sure everyone could hear it. Cynthia had the same expression as Gabriel - trying to hold in her laughter but failing horribly. And Kai-

What on EARTH?!

When Abby paused by her father's side, she immediately erupted into uncontrollable giggling that made her shoulders quiver. She clapped her hands over her mouth and snorted into her palms at the confusing but hilarious sight in front of her.

Kai was... Abby wasn't even sure what he was doing. It looked like he was walking in place, but he was lifting his knees higher than normal and sliding the bottoms of his feet over the hardwood floor beneath him. His elbows were bent and jutting out, his hands closed into fists. His head and elbows were swinging in unison with each sliding step that he took, and there was a delighted smile on his face.

"See?" Falte was saying, his voice shaking with a laugh. "Now you know I wasn't kidding! He did do that!"

"Dang it," Gabriel said through his giggles. "I wanted to start doing it and embarrass him."

"Lucky I'm in a good enough mood to do it anyway," Kai said without opening his eyes, which were closed. "Though I'm sure if you do it any other day, I'll be sure to get embarrassed."

Shintaro threw back his head and laughed even louder, his genuine laugh making a few people turn and tilt their heads at their usually stone-faced hero.

"WHAT ON PLANET EARTH DID I JUST COME INTO?" Abby spat through her fingers.

Immediately, Kai's eyes flew open and he froze, the smile vanishing and his brown eyes opening wide. He quickly lowered his arms and stood straight, closing his mouth over the laughter that he had been about to let out.

"A-Abby," he said shortly, as a quick greeting. "What are you doing up? Shouldn't you be-"

"I feel a lot better," she interrupted him. "Especially now. What the heck was that?"

"It- Um. I was..." Kai muttered, running one hand through his hair in embarrassment.

"It was hilarious," Abby said with a laugh. "Why didn't you ever do that until now? That's so great!"

"He used to do it when he was little," Falte said with a cheerful laugh.

"Really?" Abby said eagerly. "Aww, man, I wish I could have seen that!"

Shintaro was now giggling like a madman, one hand clasped over his mouth. Linda was watching him with a delighted expression, her elbows resting on the table.

"I- You never- When did-" Kai tried, but again, his words blended over each other in his flustered embarrassment.

Abby laughed and hurried towards him, quickly wrapping him into a hug with a sigh. "I love you so much."
