let finley say f*ck 2k21 (a fic update)

i haven't posted anything on here for? 4 months?? and i don't even think my last update really counts lol. so I thought I'd give a finley fic status report for anyone who cares as there have been Some Changes

Originally my equinox semi-reboot timeskip fic, solstice, was all going to be one big thing with three extra long backstory chapters for each of the main cast - like mini fics inside a fic. fic sandwich. i chose to do this because that's what would have happened with Mason's backstory in equinox had i reached that point. However, as writing progressed I realised these chapters - Finley's in particular - were far, far too long to just shove in as flashbacks. like 60k words too long. I also realised that I much preferred writing Finley's fic to solstice itself. So I'm approaching it a little differently.

Solstice is gone (for now). Say hello to White Dwarf.

White Dwarf is planned to be a 10-ish chapter fic based on Finley's life as an apprentice to Professor Sycamore in Lumiose City between where equinox would have ended and the start of solstice. I chose to do this as I'm approaching the story as if Equinox was never written, and we're meeting Finley for the first time. I found while writing that the huge information void that came with jumping straight into Solstice was too big to ignore, so White Dwarf will serve as both a condensed retelling of what would have been equinox and a new story of growing up, the consequences of mishandling mental illness and learning to move forward.

The main reason I haven't made an 'official' announcement like this before is because up until a couple months ago I was still very hung up on how far I wanted to go maturity-wise. My taste in fic is definitely... not so family friendly nowadays but I am very conscious that this is a kids franchise and I don't want to scar any teenyboppers y'know? My initial ideas were very dark and I really didn't want to deter readers by slapping a big ol' dead dove mature rating on a pokemon fic. Finding that balance has been a big challenge but I'm happy with my outline and the fic may just about scrape a teen and up rating depending on how many times finley drops an f bomb and how vividly I want to describe corpses

I also didn't want to announce the fic without being sure I would finish it... but I think I'm going to. It's all going to be prewritten to take some pressure off myself, so when I inevitably disappear from wattpad again for another half year don't be too concerned that the fic isn't coming. It might take a while but I can assure you it's getting there lol

I'd also like to point out that there have been many Finley Cinematic Universe canon retcons since Equinox was in circulation because I really screwed up Mason the first time around and there's a lot I need to fix regarding his character's implementation. I'm also removing Cassie entirely bc timetravelling lonashipping kids completely broke the timeline and how ultra beasts work. I... really can't remember if Cassie even made it into equinox I feel like her debut was half way through the next chapter I never got to post before I nuked my last account

In conclusion you don't need any prior equinox knowledge to read white dwarf i retconned my own prequel

And I'd also like to add that this may easily be the only fic that makes it out. As much as I'd like to tell finley and orion's starcrossed love story in solstice I am very... very done with the FCU at this point. Equinox turned 4 years old this month. I love finley with all my heart and i really just wanted to write him a fic I'm proud of before dipping out entirely, even if he's Surviving Not Thriving in this one. sorry orion and fraser i love you both so much but just seeing your fic outline scares the shit out of me it's too long lynx needs a rest

and if anyone has honestly read this far would you be interested in me posting my leftover equinox chapters? the fic was infuriatingly close to being finished lol I don't want all that work to go to waste some of it is genuinely really good. not sure how I'd present them, might just reupload equinox in its entirety as an archive here if anyone would really like to see it again
